Winter Paw Troubles: Cracks, Ice Burns & Preventative Care

All Posts

Winter can be rough on paws—both for indoor pets who go outside briefly and for animals who spend more time in the cold. Ice, road salt, frozen sidewalks, and dry indoor heat all contribute to cracked pads and irritation. Understanding how to prevent and soothe winter paw issues keeps your animal family comfortable throughout February.

Start with protection before going outdoors. Applying a thin layer of paw balm acts as a barrier against salt and ice. For dogs who tolerate footwear, booties offer even stronger protection. Cats who step onto cold porches also benefit from a light layer of balm, especially older cats with dry pads. Goats walking across frozen barnyards and horses trekking across icy paths need careful monitoring for cracks and bruising too.

After every outing, wipe or rinse paws. Salt and chemical de-icers can cause burns or irritate skin, and ice chunks often lodge between toes. Warm, damp cloths work well for quick cleaning, while a bowl of lukewarm water is perfect after long walks. Always dry paws thoroughly afterward.

Check paws daily. Look for redness, flaking, splitting pads, or swelling. Pets may lick excessively when uncomfortable, which can worsen irritation. Early detection lets you intervene before problems escalate. Even chickens can show cracked feet if coops get too damp—deep bedding and dry perches help prevent this.

Improve indoor air. Dry heat reduces moisture in paw pads, making them more susceptible to cracking. Humidifiers, warm resting spots, and routine grooming help maintain healthy skin. Keep nails trimmed too; long nails change paw angle and increase pressure on pads.

If your pet needs paw balm, winter booties, or gentle grooming wipes, The Hungry Puppy offers paw-care essentials for dogs, cats, and even small livestock. A few simple habits make winter much easier on sensitive feet.
