As the days grow longer and the New Jersey heat beams down more brightly, our adorable furry companions are just as susceptible to the summer swelter as we are. As dedicated pet parents, it's important to remember that with the sun shining and the temperatures rising, maintaining our pets' hydration levels becomes more critical.
During my own dog’s midday romp around The Hungry Puppy’s free dog park, I couldn't help but notice how the summer heat affected him more quickly than in cooler seasons. This brought the importance of keeping him adequately hydrated to the forefront of my mind. Water forms about 75% of a healthy dog's body, playing a vital role in its overall health, aiding essential functions such as digestion, absorption, circulation, and body temperature regulation. Cats too, especially those that are inclined towards a diet of dry food such as Taste of The Wild, must have easy access to fresh water to prevent dehydration and promote optimal health.
Our Personal Pet Consultant at The Hungry Puppy shared some insightful tips on how to ensure that our pets stay hydrated in the hotter months. For one, it's not just the quantity of water that's important. We should also consider the quality of the water we give to our pets. Purified water, free from chemicals often found in tap water, is typically the best choice for our four-legged friends. Also, for finicky drinkers, moistening their food or adding wet food like Canidae into their diet can provide some extra hydration.
Dogs and cats cooled by sweating through their paws and panting could use a little extra help combatting the heat. Fresh cold water refills throughout the day can be an excellent measure to keep pets hydrated. Plus, having multiple bowls of water stationed around the house and the yard entices pets to drink more. If your pet is a reluctant drinker, try introducing creative hydration solutions like enrichment toys that incorporate water, interactive fountains, or even flavor-infused ice cubes.
Also, watch out for telltale signs of dehydration in your pets: sunken eyes, lethargy, loss of appetite, dry mouth, and increased heart rate. If you see any of these signs, consult your veterinarian immediately. Remember, prevention is better than cure, and with a little bit of attention and care, we can ensure our pets are safe, healthy, and perfectly hydrated, even amidst the heat of the New Jersey summer.
Let's work together to keep our pets comfortable and healthy during the summer months. After all, a well-hydrated pet is a happy pet!
