We don't sell any of these three products, so this isn't about anything on our shelves. But a lot of you feed raw, a lot of you order online, and recalls get shared around fast and fuzzy. Here are the facts in one place, with the lot numbers, so you can check your freezer and move on with your day.
1. Northwest Naturals frozen raw chicken (August 28, 2026)
FDA testing found Salmonella, and in one product Listeria too. Two items were recalled:
- Northwest Naturals Frozen Chicken Recipe (cat food and dog topper), 2 lb bag, lot B-5, best by 01/26/2028, UPC 087316384956
- Northwest Naturals Frozen Raw Diet for Dogs Chicken Recipe, 6 lb bag, lot B-19, best by 01/25/2028, UPC 087316380392
The company says no illnesses have been reported. Return unused food where you bought it for a refund. Questions: 1-866-637-1872 (Monday through Thursday, 8am to 4pm Pacific) or recallinfo@nw-naturals.net.
2. Darwin's frozen raw cat food (FDA advisory, October 26, 2026)
This one is an FDA warning, not a company recall. The FDA asked for a recall, and says the company hadn't done an adequate one yet. Two samples tested positive for Salmonella after two cats got sick (one was hospitalized; both recovered once they stopped eating it).
- Darwin's Natural Selections Chicken Recipe for Cats, frozen 2 lb packages split into four sections
- Lot 12731 (made July 8, 2026) and lot 12493 (made April 2, 2026)
- The lot code is on the front of the lower left section
Darwin's sells by online subscription and the packs don't have an expiration date, so they could still be sitting in a freezer. If you have those lots, or you can't read the code, the FDA says throw it out in a sealed container that wildlife and other animals can't get into. Don't donate it.
3. Fi dog supplements (September 2026)
Fi Barking Labs recalled two supplement powders because an ingredient from a supplier may carry Salmonella. They were sold direct, on Amazon and on Chewy.
- Fi Calming Supplement for Dogs, 180 g, lot 26118
- Fi 8-in-1 Formula Supplement for Dogs, 180 g, lot 26159
No illnesses were reported. Fi says to stop using it, seal the container tightly and throw it away. Questions: 1-888-434-3647 (every day, 10am to 8pm Eastern) or support@tryfi.com.
Signs to watch for
In pets: vomiting, diarrhea (sometimes bloody), fever, not eating, or acting tired and low. A pet can also carry Salmonella and look completely fine. If something seems off, call your vet and mention the food.
In people: diarrhea, fever and stomach cramps. Listeria is a bigger worry for anyone pregnant, newborns, adults 65 and up, and anyone with a weakened immune system. Call your doctor if you get sick after handling a recalled product.
How to handle raw safely at home
Raw feeding can be done safely. It just takes the same habits you'd use with raw chicken in your own kitchen:
- Keep raw frozen or in the fridge, and away from your family's food. Freezing does not kill Salmonella, it just puts it on pause.
- Wash your hands after handling the food, the bowls and the clean-up.
- Wash bowls, scoops and counters after every meal, not just once a day.
- Pick up the yard right away, and skip the face kisses for a bit after mealtime (I know, I know).
Some brands we carry build in extra safety steps. Stella & Chewy's, for example, uses high pressure processing (HPP) and batch testing, which they explain on their safe raw feeding page. You can browse our frozen raw for dogs, frozen raw for cats and freeze-dried dog food, or just call us at 732-938-4470 and we'll help you pick.
If you're ever unsure whether something in your freezer is part of a recall, call or stop in. We'll look it up with you.
