Post-Fireworks Recovery: Calming Overwhelmed Pets the Day After

All Posts

July 5th is the national holiday of “Why is my dog acting hungover?” Pets often spend July 4th overwhelmed, overstimulated, or absolutely convinced the world was ending. The day after is all about decompression.

Expect exhaustion. Dogs may sleep extra, cling more, or seem emotionally drained. Cats may hide, avoid loud noises, or act suspicious of windows. Goats and horses often skip grazing until they feel safe again. Give everyone space.

Rebuild routine. Stick to normal feeding and walk times. Predictability lowers stress quickly. Keep the day quiet and low-stimulation — no surprise visitors, no noisy chores.

Offer calming enrichment. Lick mats, snuffle games, slow walks, and soft grooming help pets unwind. If you need calming treats or chews, The Hungry Puppy has many July-friendly options — ask our team for gentle choices.

Check the yard for hazards. Firework debris lands everywhere: sticks, wrappers, unexploded bits, etc. Cats and chickens especially love investigating debris — keep them safe by doing a full sweep.

Quick Tip: Avoid loud appliances (vacuum, blender) on July 5th if your pet was extremely stressed.

Your job today: create quiet, comfort, and consistency.
