Mud Season Paw Care: Cleaning, Drying & Protecting Floors

March in New Jersey means mud—lots of it. As the ground thaws and snow melts, yards become puddly, barn aisles get slick, and walks turn into muddy adventures. Dogs return from outside with wet paws, cats track tiny prints from porch visits, and even goats or chickens bring mud into barns. Keeping paws clean and preventing indoor mess requires a few thoughtful habits.

Start with a dedicated “mud zone.” Place a towel, mat, or small rug near the door where pets enter the home. Train dogs to stop on the mat for a quick paw check. Cats that explore outdoor porches can benefit from a soft towel by the entryway to catch moisture. The key is routine—pets learn quickly when expectations stay consistent.

Clean paws thoroughly after each outing. Use warm water or pet-safe wipes to remove mud from between toes and around nails. For long-haired dogs, trim fur around paw pads to prevent mud clumps. Chickens and goats walking through thawing ground may accumulate mud on claws or hooves; keeping bedding dry and replacing soggy patches helps reduce tracking in barns.

Protect paws from irritation. Mud mixed with lingering winter salt can cause dryness or cracking. Applying a light paw balm before walks creates a protective barrier, and another application after cleaning helps paws recover. Booties can help during very muddy days, especially for dogs with sensitive pads.

Maintain clean floors indoors. Vacuuming or sweeping daily reduces tracking, and washing entry rugs regularly keeps smells and stains at bay. Cats appreciate clean litter-adjacent floors, especially if mud has been tracked into the home earlier in the day.

If you need paw balms, booties, door mats, or pet-safe wipes to manage mud season, The Hungry Puppy has plenty of options to help keep your home clean and your pet comfortable. Mud season may be messy, but with the right tools, it doesn’t have to be stressful.
