Why Stella Sends You to a Store for Their Kibble

• Authority • Kibble • Local • Stella & Chewy's

Go to Stella & Chewy's website and try to buy a bag of their Raw Coated Kibble. You cannot. Their own product page says the food is available at your local neighborhood pet store, or online from Amazon or Chewy, but is not available for purchase on their site.

That is unusual enough to be worth pointing out. A manufacturer with a working online store, choosing not to sell one of its own lines through it.

We are obviously not a neutral party here. We are the local neighborhood pet store in that sentence. But the arrangement is real and it is printed on their pages, and it tells you something about how the dry food side of this brand is meant to be sold.

Dry food is the part of a pet food range where advice matters most and marketing helps least. A bag of kibble is a sixty day commitment for most households. Getting the protein wrong, or the calorie density wrong for a dog who has slowed down, is not a mistake you discover on day three. It shows up at a weigh-in months later. Whereas a topper or a treat is a low-stakes purchase that corrects itself quickly if it was wrong.

So it is not surprising that the lines Stella sells direct are the easy ones and the lines they route through stores are the ones where somebody might reasonably need to ask a question first.

What that should mean in practice, if it is going to mean anything, is that the store actually answers the question. Not every store does. Our own position is that if you walk in and ask about Raw Blend Cage Free, you should get told that it contains duck and quail as well as chicken, that peas and lentils sit third and fourth, and that its probiotic guarantee is ten million CFU per pound against twenty million on the freeze-dried side. All three of those are on the bag. None of them are on the front of it.

Some of that works against the sale. That is the point.

We carry a lot of Stella, we sell a lot of Stella, and we still think the grain-free kibble is the wrong first choice for a household that came to this brand specifically because the freeze-dried avoids peas and lentils. Saying that costs us a bag occasionally. It saves us a customer who feels misled, which is a worse trade in every direction.

The other side of the arrangement is practical. Products that do not sell constantly we order in fresh rather than letting a bag sit, which adds a few days and means the date code on what you get home is one we would be happy with ourselves. If a particular recipe is what your dog eats, a subscription lets us time our orders to your schedule. That is the whole reason we work that way.

And if you buy enough of it, our freeze-dried Frequent Buyer card is buy nine get one free across dinner patties, meal mixers, dinner morsels, Stella's Solutions and dinner dust. Treats and one ounce trial bags are excluded, items are grouped by species and size, and the free item comes from the same group and is of equal or lesser value than the least valued item on the card. You will need a valid email and a current loyalty account with us. The frozen program is a separate card and the two do not combine.

Next time a brand tells you to go to a store, it is worth asking what they expect the store to do that a checkout page cannot.
