Stella & Chewy's Raw Blend Cage-Free Recipe Grain Free Dry Dog Food
Baked kibble coated in freeze-dried raw, with freeze-dried raw pieces mixed through. Three birds in the recipe, and one of them is unusual enough to lead with.
There is quail in this kibble
Chicken, duck and quail. Quail sits tenth on the published list, which is not a trace amount, and it appears in very little else on a dry food shelf.
The chicken does most of the work... chicken, chicken meal, chicken fat, chicken liver, chicken gizzard across the top eleven. But the duck at position five and the quail at ten are real inclusions, not decoration.
One thing the name doesn't tell you: there is salmon oil in it, at position twelve. If you're avoiding fish, that matters.
The cleanest legume list in the grain-free line
Peas and lentils, at three and four. That's it for legume fractions.
Worth knowing because Stella's Red Meat recipes carry four separate legume fractions in their top seven: peas, lentils, chickpeas and pea protein. Same brand, same line, meaningfully different construction.
| Raw Blend recipe | Legume fractions in the top seven |
|---|---|
| Cage-Free | 2 (peas, lentils) |
| Free Range Lamb | 2 (lentils, peas) |
| Red Meat | 4 (peas, lentils, chickpeas, pea protein) |
| Small Breed Red Meat | 4 (peas, lentils, chickpeas, pea protein) |
| Wholesome Grains Cage-Free | 0 — legume-free |
Stella also adds taurine and guarantees it at 0.2% minimum. If legume-heavy grain-free diets are something you've discussed with your vet, that guarantee is the figure to bring to the conversation. And if you'd rather avoid legumes altogether, Stella's Wholesome Grains Cage-Free recipe is the same bird blend with oatmeal, barley and quinoa in place of the peas and lentils... legume-free and potato-free.
Best omega figures in the grain-free line
35% protein, 14% fat, 434 calories a cup, and it carries the highest published omega-6 and omega-3 of the four grain-free Raw Blend recipes, at 3.6% and 0.6%. Joint support is even at 1,200 mg/kg of both glucosamine and chondroitin, which is the top of the range too.
| Raw Blend recipe | Protein | Fat | Omega-3 | kcal/cup |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Red Meat | 36% | 14.5% | 0.3% | 442 |
| Cage-Free | 35% | 14% | 0.6% | 434 |
| Free Range Lamb | 31% | 14% | 0.6% | 432 |
| Wholesome Grains Cage-Free | 29% | 17% | 0.3% | 435 |
At 14% fat this is one of the more moderate options in the line, which suits a dog that doesn't need the extra calories.
One gap on Stella's page we're not going to paper over
There is no AAFCO nutritional adequacy statement. Stella publishes none for this product and names no life stage. On a complete dry food that's the single most important line on the label... it's what tells you whether a food is formulated for adult maintenance, for growth, or for all life stages. We checked their page twice. It isn't there.
We won't invent one. Ask us and we'll read it off the bag in the shop, particularly if this is going to a puppy or a pregnant dog.

Trace amounts of these ingredients may be present. Worth knowing if you're avoiding grain for a sensitive dog rather than by preference.

Calorie content
434 kcal per cup ... 3,671 kcal/kg
Dense for a kibble. If you're coming from a cheaper bag, measure to this chart rather than keeping your old scoop.
Feeding guidelines, adult dogs
Cups per day, split across two meals. Stella does not state what size cup their chart is based on; the standard for dry food is a level 8-fluid-ounce dry measuring cup.
| Your dog's weight | Cups per day |
|---|---|
| 2-8 lb | ¼ - ¾ |
| 8-15 lb | ¾ - 1 |
| 15-30 lb | 1 - 1¾ |
| 30-40 lb | 1¾ - 2¼ |
| 40-50 lb | 2¼ - 2½ |
| 50-60 lb | 2½ - 3 |
| 60-70 lb | 3 - 3¼ |
| 70-80 lb | 3¼ - 3¾ |
| 80-90 lb | 3¾ - 4 |
| 90-100 lb | 4 - 4¼ |
| Over 100 lb | 4¼, plus ½ cup per additional 10 lb |
Feeding guidelines, puppies
| Puppy's weight | Cups per day |
|---|---|
| 1-5 lb | ½ - 1 |
| 6-10 lb | 1 - 2 |
| 11-20 lb | 2 - 3 |
| 21-40 lb | 3 - 4 |
| 41-60 lb | 4 - 6 |
Stella adds that puppies may need up to twice the amount listed for an adult. Since Stella publishes no life stage for this food, as above, please ask us to check the bag before feeding it to a puppy.
Every chart is a starting point. Check your dog's body condition after two or three weeks and adjust.
Switching over
Stella's guidance: introduce gradually over seven to ten days, mixing with the current food and shifting the ratio. Sudden diet changes, overfeeding included, can cause digestive upset.
