Horse Autumn Prep: Blanketing Basics, Mud Management & Seasonal Grazing

• All Posts

October is transition month for horses — cool mornings, warm afternoons, unpredictable rain, and early mud. Horses experience wide temperature swings this time of year, and owners must adapt routines accordingly. Blanketing decisions begin, mud management ramps up, and grazing patterns change. Proper fall prep ensures horses stay healthy, comfortable, and ready for winter.

Blanketing isn’t one-size-fits-all. Some horses grow thick coats early, while others need lightweight blankets by mid-October. Monitor body condition, coat thickness, and nighttime temperatures before deciding. Over-blanketing causes overheating, while under-blanketing leaves horses uncomfortable. Temperatures shift quickly this time of year. Better blankets equal happier horses.

Mud season arrives abruptly. Wet weather creates slippery areas that increase risk of thrush, abscesses, and strains. Cleaning hooves regularly, adding gravel or mats in high-traffic zones, and adjusting turnout schedules help minimize mud issues. Horses express discomfort through subtle behavior — missing these cues leads to larger problems. Consistency supports hoof health.

Pasture quality changes in fall. Cool-season grasses grow slowly, and some horses need supplemental hay earlier than expected. Adjust feed as grazing declines, and consider mineral supplementation to support coat growth and immune health. If you're refreshing fall feed or supplements, The Hungry Puppy carries equine nutrition essentials for seasonal shifts. Preventative feeding reduces winter stress.

Shelter becomes essential. Horses need dry, draft-free areas without sealing out all airflow. A balanced environment helps prevent respiratory issues and prepares horses for colder months. Fall is foundation season — smart prep pays off all winter.
