Cool Treats: DIY Frozen Snacks for Cats and Dogs

All Posts

When summer heat hits, nothing says “I love you” like a cool, tasty treat — especially one made just for your pet! Homemade frozen snacks are fun, simple, and healthier than most store-bought ice creams.

Start with a safe base. For dogs, plain yogurt, pumpkin puree, or low-sodium chicken broth work beautifully. For cats, a blend of wet food and water or a lickable treat frozen into cubes is perfect. Avoid anything with xylitol, chocolate, or added sugar.

Add pet-safe fruits or veggies. Dogs love blueberries, strawberries, and bananas. Cats might enjoy a little tuna water or bits of cooked chicken. Just keep portions small and simple.

Easy recipes to try:

  • Frozen Peanut Butter Bites: Mix plain peanut butter with a bit of mashed banana, spoon into ice cube trays, and freeze.

  • Chicken Broth Pops: Pour low-sodium chicken broth into silicone molds; add a few treats inside for surprise crunches.

  • Cat Cream Cubes: Blend a teaspoon of tuna with water, pour into molds, and freeze — a cool fishy delight!

Serve smart. Limit portions — one or two cubes at a time — and always supervise pets while they eat frozen treats to prevent gulping or choking.

Upgrade your molds. Silicone trays, bone-shaped molds, or even paper cups work well. They make cleanup easy and portioning fun.

Store and share. Keep frozen treats in labeled bags or containers and store them for up to a month. You can even gift extras to pet friends in your neighborhood.

And if DIY isn’t your thing, The Hungry Puppy has a selection of pre-made frozen treats and pup-friendly ice creams, perfect for a quick grab on a hot day. Pair it with a cooling mat or new summer toy, and you’ve got one happy, chill pet.

Cool treats, wagging tails, and big smiles — that’s what July should be all about!
