Stella & Chewy's Raw Coated Kibble Cage-Free Duck Recipe Dry Dog Food
We have to lead with this, because of who buys a duck food.
Duck appears once. Turkey appears five times.
Here is the published ingredient order, top thirteen:
- Cage-Free Duck
- Turkey Meal
- Peas
- Lentils
- Turkey Fat
- Cage-Free Turkey
- Flaxseed
- Tomato Pomace
- Pea Protein
- Natural Vegetable Flavor
- Turkey Liver
- Turkey Gizzard
- Goose
Duck is the first ingredient and then never appears again. Turkey is in five separate positions, including the meal, the fat and all the organ content. There is goose at thirteen and salmon oil further down.
Four bird species, and the one on the front of the bag is the only one that appears a single time.
People buy duck food for one reason above all others: their dog has reacted to chicken or turkey and they are trying a different bird. If that's you, this is the wrong bag, and nothing on the front of it will tell you. If you're running an elimination diet with your vet, same answer.
We'd rather lose the sale than have you feed your dog turkey by accident. Come and talk to us about what actually qualifies... Stella's freeze-dried Dandy Lamb and Absolutely Rabbit patties are genuinely single-species, and we can go through the kibble shelf with you.
For a dog that eats poultry happily, none of this is a problem. It's a good food and a varied one. Just buy it knowing what's in it.
It has the best omega-3 figure of any Stella kibble
1.0% minimum, which is the highest across both the Raw Coated and Raw Blend lines... roughly three times what their beef recipes carry.
| Raw Coated Kibble recipe | Protein | Fat | Omega-3 | kcal/cup |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Chicken (adult) | 33% | 14% | 0.50% | 435 |
| Chicken (small breed) | 33% | 14% | 0.60% | 445 |
| Duck | 34% | 13% | 1.00% | 445 |
| Beef | 32% | 15% | 0.30% | 434 |
| Lamb | 30% | 16% | 0.75% | 438 |
| Whitefish | 35% | 13.5% | 0.70% | 430 |
It's also the lowest-fat recipe in the line at 13%, while carrying the highest calorie density at 3,791 kcal/kg. Low fat and high calories is an unusual combination and it comes from the carbohydrate side of the formula.
Three legume fractions
Peas at three, lentils at four, pea protein at nine.
Stella's bullet says low carbohydrate diet (only 28% carbs). They print that identical line on all seven Raw Coated recipes despite materially different formulas, and no carbohydrate figure appears in the guaranteed analysis to support it. We pass it on as their claim, not ours.
Stella does add taurine and guarantee it at 0.2% minimum. If legume-containing diets are something you've discussed with your vet, that's the figure to bring.
Two gaps on Stella's page
There is no AAFCO nutritional adequacy statement and no named life stage. On a complete dry food that's the most important line on the label. We checked twice. Ask us and we'll read it off the bag, especially for a puppy or a pregnant dog.
The "added probiotics" bullet has no number behind it here. The four fermentation products are in the ingredient list, but unlike Stella's Grass-Fed Lamb kibble this recipe publishes no total microorganisms guarantee. Probiotics with no count is a claim you can't check.

Calorie content
445 kcal per cup ... 3,791 kcal/kg
The most calorie-dense kibble Stella makes. If you're switching from a cheaper bag, measure to this chart rather than keeping your old scoop... the same cup carries more here than almost anywhere else on the shelf.
Feeding guidelines, adult dogs
Cups per day, split across two meals. Stella does not state what size cup their chart is based on; the standard for dry food is a level 8-fluid-ounce dry measuring cup.
| Your dog's weight | Cups per day |
|---|---|
| 2-8 lb | ¼ - ¾ |
| 8-15 lb | ¾ - 1 |
| 15-30 lb | 1 - 1¾ |
| 30-40 lb | 1¾ - 2¼ |
| 40-50 lb | 2¼ - 2½ |
| 50-60 lb | 2½ - 3 |
| 60-70 lb | 3 - 3¼ |
| 70-80 lb | 3¼ - 3¾ |
| 80-90 lb | 3¾ - 4 |
| 90-100 lb | 4 - 4½ |
| Over 100 lb | 4½, plus ½ cup per additional 10 lb |
Feeding guidelines, puppies
| Puppy's weight | Cups per day |
|---|---|
| 1-5 lb | ½ - 1 |
| 6-10 lb | 1 - 2 |
| 10-20 lb | 2 - 3 |
| 21-40 lb | 3 - 4 |
| 41-60 lb | 4 - 6 |
Stella adds that puppies may need up to twice the amount listed for an adult. Since Stella publishes no life stage for this food, please ask us to check the bag before feeding it to a puppy.
Every chart is a starting point. Check your dog's body condition after two or three weeks and adjust.
Switching over
Stella's guidance: introduce gradually over seven to ten days, mixing with the current food and shifting the ratio. Sudden diet changes, overfeeding included, can cause digestive upset.
