Stella & Chewy's Raw Blend Red Meat Recipe Grain Free Dry Dog Food

Baked kibble coated in freeze-dried raw, with freeze-dried raw pieces mixed through it. 36% protein and 442 calories a cup, which is high for a kibble and is the main reason people buy it.

Two things about the ingredient list that the name doesn't prepare you for.

Pork is the second ingredient. Salmon is the fifth.

Stella markets this recipe as beef, lamb and venison. Here is the actual published order of the first thirteen:

  1. Beef
  2. Pork Meal
  3. Peas
  4. Lentils
  5. Salmon Meal
  6. Chickpeas
  7. Pea Protein
  8. Sunflower Oil
  9. Lamb
  10. Tomato Pomace
  11. Beef Liver
  12. Beef Kidney
  13. Free-Range Venison

Pork meal and salmon meal both outrank the lamb and the venison the product is named for, and neither pork nor fish is named anywhere on the bag front.

For most dogs that's simply a varied protein profile and no cause for concern. But if you are avoiding pork or avoiding fish, this food contains meaningful amounts of both, and the name will not tell you. If you're running an elimination diet, this is the wrong bag entirely... come and talk to us about what actually qualifies.

Four legume fractions in the top seven

Peas, lentils, chickpeas and pea protein occupy positions three, four, six and seven.

Stella's bullet for this recipe reads low carbohydrate diet (only 28% carbs). We'll pass that on as their claim and note what we found: there is no carbohydrate figure anywhere in the guaranteed analysis to support it, and no typical-analysis table on their page either. Grain-free kibbles replace grain with something, and in this recipe that something is legumes.

Worth saying clearly, because it cuts the other way too: Stella adds taurine and guarantees it at 0.2% minimum, which is a deliberate choice and not every grain-free kibble does it. If legume-heavy grain-free diets are something you've discussed with your vet, that guarantee is the number to bring to the conversation... and if you'd rather avoid legumes entirely, Stella's own Wholesome Grains Cage-Free recipe is legume-free and potato-free, with oatmeal, barley and quinoa instead.

The organ content is genuinely good

Beef liver, beef kidney, beef heart and beef tripe all appear, alongside free-range venison and lamb. For a baked kibble that's an unusually complete organ profile, and it is the real argument for this food over a conventional bag.

Two gaps on Stella's own page that we're not going to paper over

There is no AAFCO nutritional adequacy statement. Stella publishes none for this product, and names no life stage. On a complete dry food that's the single most important line on a label... it's what tells you whether a food is formulated for adult maintenance, for growth, or for all life stages. We checked their page twice. It isn't there.

We're not going to invent one, and we'd rather you hear it from us than assume. Ask us and we'll read the adequacy statement off the bag in the shop, particularly if this is going to a puppy or a pregnant dog, where life stage genuinely matters.

Stella's adult feeding chart is missing a row. It runs 40-50 lb, then jumps straight to 60-70 lb, with no 50-60 lb row. Their other recipes all have one. We've printed their chart exactly as published, gap and all, rather than filling in a number they didn't give... if your dog is in that range, the sensible reading is to sit between the rows either side, and we're happy to work it out with you.

Reproduced exactly as Stella & Chewy's publishes it. Their page also carries this footnote: manufactured in a facility that may also process products containing grains, corn, wheat, or soy. Trace amounts of these ingredients may be present. That matters if you're avoiding those for a sensitive dog rather than by preference.

Guaranteed analysis

  • Crude Protein (min) ... 36%
  • Crude Fat (min) ... 14.5%
  • Crude Fiber (max) ... 6%
  • Moisture (max) ... 12%
  • Omega 6 Fatty Acids (min) ... 3%
  • Omega 3 Fatty Acids (min) ... 0.3%
  • Taurine (min) ... 0.2%
  • Glucosamine (min) ... 1,200 mg/kg
  • Chondroitin Sulfate (min) ... 900 mg/kg
  • Total Microorganisms (min) ... 10,000,000 CFU/lb

Stella footnotes the starred lines on their own label: omega fatty acids, taurine, glucosamine, chondroitin and total microorganisms are not recognized as essential nutrients by the AAFCO Dog Food Nutrient Profiles. We pass that footnote on with the figures rather than just the figures.

Calorie content

442 kcal per cup ... 3,760 kcal/kg

That is dense for a kibble. A cup of this carries more than most conventional bags, so if you're switching from a cheaper food, measure to this chart rather than keeping your old scoop.

Feeding guidelines, adult dogs

Cups per day, split across two meals. Stella does not state what size cup their chart is based on; the standard for dry food is a level 8-fluid-ounce dry measuring cup.

Your dog's weight Cups per day
2-8 lb ¼ - ¾
8-15 lb ¾ - 1
15-30 lb 1 - 1¾
30-40 lb 1¾ - 2¼
40-50 lb 2¼ - 2¾
50-60 lb no row published — ask us
60-70 lb 3 - 3½
70-80 lb 3½ - 3¾
80-90 lb 3¾ - 4
90-100 lb 4 - 4½
Over 100 lb 4½, plus ½ cup per additional 10 lb

Feeding guidelines, puppies

Puppy's weight Cups per day
1-5 lb ½ - 1
6-10 lb 1 - 2
11-20 lb 2 - 3
21-40 lb 3 - 4
41-60 lb 4 - 6

Stella adds that puppies may need up to twice the amount listed for an adult dog. Note that Stella publishes no life stage for this food, as above, so if you're feeding a puppy please ask us to check the bag first.

Every chart is a starting point. Check your dog's body condition after two or three weeks and adjust.

Switching over

Stella's guidance: introduce gradually over seven to ten days, mixing with the current food and shifting the ratio across. Sudden diet changes, overfeeding included, can cause digestive upset.

Sizes

3.5 lb, 10 lb and 22 lb.
