Stella & Chewy's Dandy Lamb Frozen Raw Dinner Patties

Raw grass-fed lamb patties, frozen right after production. Stella puts the recipe at 95% lamb, organs and bone.

The richest recipe in the frozen range

This one is worth understanding before you buy it. Dandy Lamb is the only frozen recipe where fat matches protein exactly... 13.5% of each.

At 2,085 kcal/kg it is the most calorie-dense of the six, and it has the lowest protein figure of the six. That combination means two things in practice: you feed less of it than you would the chicken, and it is a noticeably richer food going in.

If you're coming off something lean, go slower than the usual seven to ten days. A dog moving from the chicken recipe to this one is taking a real step up in fat, and the usual symptom of rushing a rich food is a loose stool for a few days.

Why the protein number looks low next to the freeze-dried

Because this food is 68% water and the freeze-dried version is about 5%. Stella's freeze-dried Dandy Lamb page publishes a second "rehydrated" analysis showing what the dried patties become once you add the water back... and those rehydrated figures match the frozen figures on this page.

It is the same recipe. One has the water in it, one has had the water taken out. A 13.5% frozen patty is not a weaker food than a 40-something-percent freeze-dried one.

What differs is price per pound of food, freezer space, and whether it can be posted. Frozen is cheaper on the same recipe but is pickup and local delivery only. Freeze-dried costs more, lives in a cupboard, and ships free over $75.

Five lamb components, and one we want to flag

Grass-fed lamb, lamb spleen, lamb liver, lamb heart, lamb kidney, lamb bone. Six lamb items before anything else appears... spleen in second position is unusual, and heart is worth pointing out.

A genuine discrepancy in Stella's own published lists: this frozen patty includes lamb heart. The frozen Dandy Lamb morsels list includes it too, in the same position. But the ingredient list Stella publishes for the freeze-dried Dandy Lamb patties does not show heart at all.

We've verified that three times across their pages and it holds. We don't know which list is the incomplete one, and we won't guess... Stella's website has dropped single ingredient lines before that the actual bag carries. If the heart matters to you either way, ask us and we'll read the box in front of you.

Lamb is the only animal species in it. After the lamb: pumpkin seed, organic cranberries, spinach, broccoli, beets, carrots, squash and blueberries. Fenugreek seed, kelp, four probiotic strains, a full vitamin and mineral package, added taurine. Pea-free, lentil-free and potato-free.

Handling raw food safely

From Stella's own published guidance:

• Defrost overnight in a covered container in the refrigerator. To thaw faster, seal the food in a zip-top bag or glass bowl and submerge in warm water
• Never cook, heat or microwave it
• Once thawed, patties keep in the refrigerator up to two days
• Do not refreeze once thawed. Patties can be broken up after thawing if you prefer
• Wash your hands before and after handling it
• Use a clean dish every time, and clean any utensils or surfaces the raw food touches
• Served food can sit out up to two hours... discard anything left after that

Worth knowing: none of this appears on Stella's product page. It comes from their separate feeding-frozen-food article, which is the only place they publish it. If there are small children or anyone immune-compromised in the house, talk to us and to your doctor before switching to raw.

Feeding guidelines

Stella's published amounts for adult dogs, per day, split across two meals. Small patties are about 1.5 oz; large are about 8 oz.

Stella adds that puppies may need up to twice the adult amount.

Notice these amounts run lower than the chicken recipe at every weight... that's the calorie density doing its job, not a misprint. Any chart is a starting point: check your dog's body condition after two or three weeks and adjust.

Switching over

Stella's guidance is seven to ten days, mixing with the current food and shifting the ratio gradually. Given how rich this particular recipe is, we'd lean toward the longer end of that. Sudden changes and overfeeding both cause digestive upset.

Sizes

3 lb box of roughly 1.5 oz patties, and 6 lb and 12 lb boxes of roughly 8 oz patties. Small patties portion finely for a small dog; large patties take less freezer space per pound.

There is also a frozen Dandy Lamb morsels version... same recipe and same calorie density, loose pieces measured by the cup instead of counted.

On the label statement

Stella does not publish the formal AAFCO nutritional adequacy statement or the life stage on their website for any frozen or freeze-dried raw product, so we can't tell you from here which life stage it's approved for. Ask us and we'll read it off the box rather than guess.
