Stella & Chewy's Chewy's Chicken Frozen Raw Dinner Patties

Raw cage-free chicken patties, frozen right after production. The same recipe as the freeze-dried Chewy's Chicken patties we stock... just with the water still in it.

Why the protein number looks so much lower than the freeze-dried

This confuses almost everyone who compares the two boxes side by side, and the answer is simpler than it looks.

Frozen Freeze-dried
Crude Protein (min) 15.5% 44%
Crude Fat (min) 9% 25%
Moisture (max) 72% 5%
kcal/kg 1,460 4,214

It is essentially the same food. Stella's freeze-dried page publishes a second "rehydrated" analysis showing what the freeze-dried patties become once you add the water back: 15% protein, 9% fat, 72% moisture. Those line up with the frozen figures almost exactly.

One honest note: the frozen page says 15.5% protein and the rehydrated figure says 15%. Half a percentage point. That's within the slack you'd expect between two separately printed guarantees on the same recipe, and it is nothing a dog would notice... but we'd rather show you the gap than round it away.

The practical takeaway is that a 15.5% frozen patty is not a weaker food than a 44% freeze-dried one. Take the water out of this and you get that.

Frozen or freeze-dried: how to actually choose

Frozen costs less per pound of food because you aren't paying for the drying step. It needs freezer space, overnight planning, and it can't be posted... which is why this is pickup and local delivery only.

Freeze-dried costs more per pound, lives in a cupboard, travels anywhere, and ships free over $75.

If you're local and you have the freezer drawer, frozen is better value on the same recipe.

Read the first three ingredients

Chicken with ground bone, chicken liver, chicken gizzard. Stella puts the recipe at 95% cage-free chicken, organs and bone.

Chicken is the only animal species in it, which makes this one of the genuinely useful recipes for a dog who has to avoid beef, lamb or fish. Nothing is hidden behind a vague "poultry" or "meat meal" term.

After the chicken: pumpkin seed, organic cranberries, spinach, broccoli, beets, carrots, squash and blueberries. Fenugreek seed, kelp, four strains of probiotics, a full vitamin and mineral package, added taurine. Pea-free, lentil-free and potato-free.

Handling raw food safely

Stella's own published guidance:

  • Defrost overnight in a covered container in the refrigerator. To thaw faster, seal the food in a zip-top bag or glass bowl and submerge in warm water
  • Once thawed, keep refrigerated and use within two days
  • Do not refreeze raw food once it has thawed
  • Wash your hands before and after handling it
  • Use a clean dish every time, and clean anything the raw food touched
  • Served food can sit out up to two hours... anything left after that goes in the bin

It becomes second nature quickly, but it is a real difference from scooping kibble. If there are small children or anyone immune-compromised in the house, talk to us and to your doctor before switching.

Feeding guidelines

Stella's published amounts for adult dogs, split across two meals. Small patties are about 1.5 oz; large are about 8 oz.

Your dog's weight Small patties/day Large patties/day
5 lb 2½ ½
10 lb 4½ ¾
15 lb 6 1
20 lb 7½ 1¼
40 lb 12 2
60 lb 16½ 3
80 lb 21 4
100 lb 25 4½

Chicken is leaner than the beef recipe, so the amounts run higher for the same dog. That is expected, not a misprint. Treat any chart as a starting point and check your dog's condition after two or three weeks.

Switching over

Stella's guidance: introduce gradually over seven to ten days, mixing with the current food and shifting the ratio. Sudden changes and overfeeding both cause digestive upset.

Sizes

3 lb box of roughly 1.5 oz patties, and 6 lb and 12 lb boxes of roughly 8 oz patties. Small patties portion finely for a small dog; large patties are less freezer space per pound.

There is also a frozen Chewy's Chicken morsels version... same recipe, loose pieces you measure by the cup instead of counting patties.

On the label statement

Stella describes this as a 100% complete and balanced diet. They don't publish the formal AAFCO nutritional adequacy statement or the life stage on their website for any frozen or freeze-dried raw product, so we can't tell you from here which life stage it's approved for. Ask us and we'll read it off the box rather than guess.
