Stella & Chewy's FreshMade Beef, Barley & Turkey Gently Cooked Dog Food
Sous-vide cooked, then flash frozen in a 16 oz pouch. This is one of only two FreshMade recipes Stella describes for dogs of all life stages, and the name is honest about what's in it.
Read this before you buy: it lives in the freezer
FreshMade is frozen, not refrigerated and not shelf-stable. Stella's instructions:
- Store in the freezer
- Thaw in the refrigerator, in the original pouch
- Allow 24 to 36 hours to thaw completely
- Use within 5 days of thawing
You can't decide at dinnertime to feed this... you pull a pouch the day before. Because it's frozen, it's pickup or local delivery only. We can't ship it.
One of only two FreshMade recipes for all life stages
Easy to miss, and it's the main reason to choose this one. Stella's four grain-free FreshMade recipes are described as a complete meal for adult dogs only. This one and their Pork & Quinoa are described for dogs of all life stages and sizes.
Those same two are the grain-inclusive recipes, and the only two carrying a published DHA guarantee at 0.08% minimum. DHA is one of the things a growth diet is expected to supply, so that's consistent.
If you want gently cooked food for a young or growing dog, these two are where Stella points you. Read the honest caveat at the bottom about what they don't publish.
The name is honest, with one omission
Beef, beef bone broth, carrots, butternut squash, barley, kale, beef liver, cage-free turkey, apples. Beef, barley and turkey all present and all named, in roughly the order the name implies. Turkey sits eighth, so it's a genuine but minor component rather than a co-star.
The one thing not on the front: salmon oil, at position twelve. If you're avoiding fish, that matters and the name won't tell you.
Stella credits responsibly sourced grass-fed beef and cage-free turkey.
Where it sits in the line
| FreshMade recipe | Protein | Fat | kcal/pouch | Complete meal for |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Meat-A-Palooza | 10% | 9.5% | 657 | adults |
| Beefy-Licious | 11% | 7% | 653 | adults |
| Pork & Quinoa | 10% | 6.5% | 578 | all life stages |
| Beef, Barley & Turkey | 9% | 6% | 575 | all life stages |
| Gobblin' Good | 12% | 4% | 480 | adults |
| Chick-A-Lick'n | 10% | 4% | 458 | adults |
Lowest published protein minimum of the six at 9%, and the highest moisture at 78%. On a dry-matter basis that works out to roughly 41%, which is in line with a good kibble. Frozen and wet foods always read low against dry food because of the water.
About the barley
Barley sits at position five. Stella doesn't call this recipe grain-free and doesn't pretend to... their bullet says made with barley, a nutritious source of fiber and vitamins, and the only exclusion claim is no corn, wheat or soy.
Worth knowing both ways: if you're avoiding grain entirely, Gobblin' Good and Chick-A-Lick'n are the grain-free options. If grain-free legume diets are what you're trying to get away from, this recipe uses barley rather than peas and contains no legumes at all.
What "gently cooked" means here
Stella's own description: packed in BPA-free pouches, gently sous-vide cooked, then flash frozen. Sous vide means sealed and cooked slowly at a controlled low temperature.
It sits between raw and kibble: cooked, so not raw, but minimally processed and never extruded into a dry pellet. If raw makes you uneasy but you want something closer to real food than kibble, this is the category that answers that. Stella states FreshMade is reviewed by a board-certified veterinary nutritionist.

Feeding guidelines, adult dogs
| Your dog's weight | Per day |
|---|---|
| 5-10 lb | ⅓ - ½ pouch (5-8 oz) |
| 11-20 lb | ½ - 1 pouch (8-16 oz) |
| 21-30 lb | 1 - 1¼ pouches (16-20 oz) |
| 31-40 lb | 1¼ - 1½ pouches (20-24 oz) |
| Over 40 lb | 1¼ - 1½ pouches, plus about 4 oz per additional 10 lb |
As a topper: Stella's rate is ¾ oz, about 1½ tablespoons, per 10 lbs of body weight per day. Take those calories off the food underneath. Stella adds that puppies may need up to twice the adult amount.
Size
16 oz BPA-free pouch.
On the label statement
Stella describes this as complete and balanced for dogs of all life stages and says it's reviewed by a board-certified veterinary nutritionist. But they publish no AAFCO nutritional adequacy statement on their page, and "all life stages" in marketing copy is not the same as the formal AAFCO statement, which is what tells you whether a food is formulated for growth and whether that includes large-breed puppies.
We checked twice; it isn't there. If you're feeding a puppy, especially a large-breed puppy, ask us and we'll read the adequacy statement off the pouch before you commit.
