Instinct RawBoost+ Kibble Real Chicken Recipe

RawBoost+ Real Chicken is Instinct's everyday grain-free kibble with a twist: mixed in with the kibble are pieces of freeze-dried raw chicken, chicken liver and chicken heart, which Instinct calls FreshDried™ Raw. Dogs who pick through their bowl tend to go looking for those pieces first. Instinct, from Nature's Variety, makes it in the USA.

What's actually in it

Chicken is the first ingredient, followed by chicken meal, which is simply chicken with the water cooked out, so it adds concentrated protein. Turkey meal and fish meal come next on the protein side, and the freeze-dried raw chicken, liver and heart sit in the middle of the list. At 32% minimum protein it is a high-protein food.

There is no grain here. The starches come from peas, tapioca and sweet potatoes. Salmon oil and ground flaxseeds supply omega fatty acids, which Instinct includes to support skin and coat, and Instinct adds a probiotic blend (Lactobacillus acidophilus and Enterococcus faecium) to support digestive health. Glucosamine and chondroitin are guaranteed on the label. Preservation is natural, with mixed tocopherols and rosemary extract.

Who it suits, and who it doesn't

It suits a healthy adult dog with no food sensitivities, especially a picky eater who perks up at a bit of real meat in the bowl. Because Instinct's AAFCO statement covers all life stages except growth of large size dogs, it can also be fed to a small or medium breed puppy.

It isn't the right bag for a large breed puppy (70 lb or more as an adult), or for a dog avoiding chicken, turkey, fish or peas. Calorie content

3,847 kcal/kg ... 459 kcal per cup (Instinct's label: "Calorie content (calculated): ME = 3,847 kcal/kg; 459 kcal/cup"). A cup means a standard 8-fluid-ounce dry measuring cup, filled level. It measures volume, not 8 ounces by weight, so scoop it rather than weigh it.

Feeding guidelines

Instinct's published daily amounts, by your dog's weight. Split the total across two meals.

These are starting points, not prescriptions. Instinct notes that ideal amounts depend on age, weight and activity level. For dogs over 100 lb, Instinct says to add up to ¾ cup for every 20 lb. Spayed or neutered and less active dogs often need the lower end of the range. Check your dog's body condition after two or three weeks... ribs easy to feel under a thin layer, a waist visible from above... and adjust. Always keep fresh water out.

Switching over

Change foods gradually over about a week. Start with roughly a quarter RawBoost+ mixed into the old food, move to half, then three quarters, then all RawBoost+. Going slowly gives your dog's stomach time to adjust.

Sizes, and how many cups you get

3.5 lb and 20 lb bags, which hold roughly 13 and 76 level cups. For a 50 lb adult eating 2½ cups a day (the top of Instinct's adult range), that's about 5 days and about 4 weeks respectively. Cup counts are worked out from Instinct's published calorie figures and are close estimates, since kibble settles as a bag is handled.

Storage

Keep the food in its original bag, rolled down tight, somewhere cool and dry. If you use a bin, put the whole bag inside it rather than pouring the kibble in, so the lot number stays with the food. Because Instinct includes freeze-dried raw ingredients, wash your hands after handling the food and wash your dog's bowl after each meal.
