Instinct FreshRaw Patties Cage-Free Chicken Recipe Frozen Dog Food
Know Before You Buy
- Animal proteins in this recipe: Chicken (chicken, chicken liver, chicken heart), salmon oil.
- Contains: Chicken ... Fish (salmon oil) ... Flaxseed.
- Does not contain: Beef, turkey, lamb, pork, grains, corn, wheat, soy, peas, lentils, chickpeas, white potatoes, egg or dairy (per the manufacturer's ingredient list).
- Raw meat, kept frozen. This is uncooked chicken. Handle it like raw poultry from the grocery store, and remember the protein figures look low next to kibble because the food is about 70% moisture.
- Life stage: Adult maintenance. Instinct's label says it is formulated to meet the AAFCO Dog Food Nutrient Profiles for maintenance, so it is not formulated for a growing puppy.
FreshRaw Patties in Cage-Free Chicken give you a raw chicken meal in a tidy, pre-portioned shape. Thaw a few in the fridge overnight and breakfast is ready. Chicken is the protein most dogs already know, which makes this a gentle first step for families curious about raw.
What's actually in it
Chicken comes first, then chicken liver and chicken heart. Heart is a hard-working muscle meat and liver is the most nutrient-dense organ, so the recipe gets more than plain muscle meat. Instinct says the chicken is cage-free and raised without antibiotics or added hormones. Choline chloride and DL-methionine are added nutrients.
The rest is produce and supplements: carrots, apples, sweet potatoes, butternut squash, blueberries and spinach, plus ground flaxseed and salmon oil, which Instinct includes for omega fatty acids. Ground miscanthus grass is a fiber source, montmorillonite clay is a natural mineral clay, and lactic acid is used in Instinct's raw process. Vitamins and minerals are added to round out the recipe. Instinct describes the mix as 85% meat and organs and 15% non-GMO vegetables, fruits and other ingredients. Instinct says its frozen and freeze-dried raw recipes are made in its company-owned facilities in Lincoln, Nebraska.
Who it suits, and who it doesn't
It suits a dog that does well on chicken, families who want raw in an easy-to-portion format, and medium and large dogs who can eat a full patty or more at a meal.
It isn't the right choice for a dog avoiding chicken or fish, for a home short on freezer space, or for a household where raw handling would be hard to manage safely. Small dogs may find the Bites easier to portion. If you're unsure, our Personal Pet Consultant is happy to help ... call 732-938-4470.

AAFCO statement
Instinct FreshRaw Patties Cage-Free Chicken Recipe is formulated to meet the nutritional levels established by the AAFCO Dog Food Nutrient Profiles for maintenance.
In plain terms, it is a complete and balanced food for adult dogs. It is not labeled for growth, so a puppy needs a food that is.
Calorie content
1,596 kcal/kg ... 181 kcal per patty (Instinct's label: calorie content, calculated). Instinct says each patty is approximately 4 oz.
Feeding guidelines
Instinct feeds FreshRaw Patties by count. From the label: "Ideal feeding amounts depend on age, weight, and activity level." Each patty is approximately 4 oz.
| Weight of dog | Patties per day | Weight loss |
|---|---|---|
| 5-15 lb | 1-2 | 1-1½ |
| 16-25 lb | 2-3 | 1½-2½ |
| 26-50 lb | 3-5 | 2½-4 |
| 26-50 lb (as printed) | 5-6 | 4-5½ |
| 51 lb + | 6 + | 5½ + |
These are starting points, not prescriptions. Instinct notes that ideal feeding amounts depend on age, weight and activity level. Check your dog's body condition after two or three weeks... ribs easy to feel under a thin layer, a waist visible from above... and adjust. Always keep fresh water out.
Safe handling
Treat frozen raw the way you'd treat raw meat in your own kitchen. Instinct's directions are to wash hands, working surfaces, utensils, bowls and anything else that touches the food with hot, soapy water. Instinct says: "Raw Patties take ~4-6 hours to thaw in the fridge." Thaw in the refrigerator, never on the counter, and only take out what you'll feed in the next day. Instinct suggests keeping thawed food in the fridge no longer than 24 hours, and discarding anything your dog hasn't eaten within 30 minutes. Instinct's handling tips on the bag: "Keep frozen until ready to use. Patties thaw within 4-6 hours in the refrigerator and should be served cold. Discard uneaten food 30 minutes after serving. Wash hands and utensils after handling raw pet food."
Switching over
Instinct suggests moving to raw over about a week, or up to two weeks for a sensitive dog. Start with roughly a quarter FreshRaw Patties Cage-Free Chicken Recipe and three quarters of the old food for a couple of days, then step up to half, then three quarters, then all. Going slowly gives your dog's stomach time to adjust.
Sizes
6 lb bag of frozen patties. That's roughly 24 patties (Instinct says each is about 4 oz). A 20 lb dog eating 2 to 3 patties a day gets about 8 to 12 days from a bag. Counts are worked out from Instinct's printed calorie figures and are close estimates.
Storage
Keep the bag in the freezer until close to mealtime. Instinct gives an unopened bag a freezer shelf life of up to one year, without going past the printed expiration date. Seal the bag tightly after each scoop so the food doesn't pick up freezer burn.
