RawBoost+ Whole Grain Lamb & Oatmeal pairs grass-fed lamb and whole grains with Instinct's freeze-dried raw pieces. Here those pieces are beef, so the bowl gets a mix of lamb kibble and beefy raw bites.

What's actually in it

Lamb is first, followed by chicken meal, then oatmeal, barley, sorghum and brown rice. Turkey meal, chicken fat, millet and fish meal come next. The freeze-dried raw pieces are beef, beef liver, beef spleen and beef kidneys.

There are no peas, lentils or potatoes. Instinct adds a probiotic blend to support digestive health, guarantees glucosamine and chondroitin, and includes omega fatty acids from flaxseed and salmon oil, which Instinct includes to support skin and coat.

Who it suits, and who it doesn't

It suits a healthy adult dog who enjoys variety and does fine on several proteins, in a grain-inclusive food. Instinct's AAFCO statement covers all life stages except growth of large size dogs.

Instinct® RawBoost™ Whole Grain Real Lamb & Oatmeal Recipe is formulated to meet the nutritional levels established by the AAFCO Dog Food Nutrient Profiles for all life stages except for growth of large size dogs (70 lbs or more as an adult).

Calorie content

3,730 kcal/kg ... 411 kcal per cup (Instinct's label: "Calorie content (calculated): ME = 3,730 kcal/kg; 411 kcal/cup"). A cup means a standard 8-fluid-ounce dry measuring cup, filled level. It measures volume, not 8 ounces by weight, so scoop it rather than weigh it.

Feeding guidelines

Instinct's published daily amounts, by your dog's weight. Split the total across two meals.

These are starting points, not prescriptions. Instinct notes that ideal amounts depend on age, weight and activity level. For dogs over 100 lb, Instinct says to add up to ¾ cup for every 20 lb. Spayed or neutered and less active dogs often need the lower end of the range. Check your dog's body condition after two or three weeks... ribs easy to feel under a thin layer, a waist visible from above... and adjust. Always keep fresh water out.

Switching over

Change foods gradually over about a week. Start with roughly a quarter RawBoost+ Whole Grain mixed into the old food, move to half, then three quarters, then all RawBoost+ Whole Grain. Going slowly gives your dog's stomach time to adjust.

Sizes, and how many cups you get

4.5 lb and 20 lb bags, which hold roughly 19 and 82 level cups. For a 50 lb adult eating 2½ cups a day (the top of Instinct's adult range), that's about 8 days and about 5 weeks respectively. Cup counts are worked out from Instinct's published calorie figures and are close estimates, since kibble settles as a bag is handled.

Storage

Keep the food in its original bag, rolled down tight, somewhere cool and dry. If you use a bin, put the whole bag inside it rather than pouring the kibble in, so the lot number stays with the food. Because Instinct includes freeze-dried raw ingredients, wash your hands after handling the food and wash your dog's bowl after each meal.
