Know Before You Buy
- Not a complete meal on its own. Instinct states: "This product is intended for intermittent or supplemental feeding only." It's a topper for your dog's regular food.
- Animal proteins in this recipe: Chicken (chicken including ground chicken bone, chicken liver, chicken heart), turkey liver, turkey heart, salmon oil.
- Contains: Chicken ... Turkey ... Fish (salmon oil) ... Pumpkin seeds ... Flaxseed ... Kelp.
- Does not contain: Beef, grains, peas, lentils or other legumes, potatoes, egg, dairy or yeast (per the manufacturer's ingredient list).
- Not a chicken-only topper. Turkey liver and turkey heart are in the recipe, and the chicken includes ground chicken bone.
- Life stage: Supplemental feeding only, so it is meant to sit on top of a complete and balanced diet rather than replace one.
RawBoost+ Shakers are the easy way to put a little freeze-dried raw on a bowl of kibble. The chicken recipe comes as a fine, shakeable crumble in a 5.5 oz container: sprinkle it on dry, or stir it with warm water into a quick gravy. It's a favorite trick for the dog who sniffs the bowl and walks away.
What's actually in it
Chicken leads, and Instinct notes it includes ground chicken bone, followed by chicken liver, pumpkin seeds and chicken heart. Turkey liver and turkey heart come a little further down. Carrots, apples, butternut squash, broccoli, blueberries, kelp and flaxseed fill out the plant side. Instinct says the ingredients are freeze-dried raw and never cooked.
Salmon oil adds omega fatty acids, and dried chicory root is a source of fiber. Mixed tocopherols and rosemary extract keep it fresh. The fiber maximum is a high 15%, which is worth knowing if your dog has a sensitive stomach, since a little goes a long way.
Who it suits, and who it doesn't
It suits a healthy adult dog on a complete food who needs a little encouragement at mealtime, or a family who wants to add some freeze-dried raw without switching diets. Because it's supplemental only, it should never be the whole meal.

Calorie content
4,599 kcal/kg ... 23 kcal per tablespoon (Instinct's label: "Calorie content (calculated): Metabolizable Energy = 4,599 kcal/kg; 23 kcal/tablespoon"). At Instinct's sprinkle rate of 2 tablespoons per cup of food, that adds about 46 kcal for every cup of your dog's regular food, so trim the base food a little to keep the day's calories in line.
Feeding guidelines
Instinct's label directions are by amount of food, not by dog weight. It states: "This product is intended for intermittent or supplemental feeding only."
SPRINKLE ... "Shake 2 tablespoons of powder for every 1 cup of your dog's food." MIX ... "Add equal parts warm water and powder for a tasty gravy."
So a dog eating 2 cups of kibble a day would get about 4 tablespoons of Shakers, split across meals. Start with less for the first few days while your dog gets used to it.
Sizes
5.5 oz container. At 2 tablespoons per cup of food, how long it lasts depends on how much your dog eats, so start small and you'll get a feel for it within the first week.
Storage and safe handling
Keep the lid closed tight and store it somewhere cool and dry. Instinct's FAQ says opened freeze-dried food is "fresh for up to 30 days as long as it's resealed between feedings."
It's freeze-dried raw meat, so wash your hands and your dog's bowl with hot, soapy water after serving. If you make gravy, serve it right away and discard any leftovers within two hours, as Instinct advises for rehydrated food.
