Instinct PeakBoost+ Kibble Real Chicken Recipe

PeakBoost+ is Instinct's newest dry food, and the bowl looks different from any other kibble we carry. Alongside the high-protein kibble Instinct mixes in jerky strips, freeze-dried raw pieces, chewy morsels and air-dried bites. The Real Chicken recipe is the one most dogs will start with.

What's actually in it

Chicken is the first ingredient, followed by chicken meal and chicken fat. Dried chicken (the jerky and air-dried pieces), freeze-dried chicken, chicken liver and chicken heart all appear on the list, and turkey meal and fish meal add to the protein. At 34% minimum protein it is the highest-protein chicken kibble in the Instinct range we stock.

Instinct describes five kinds of pieces in the bag: kibble, jerky strips, freeze-dried raw bites, chewy morsels and air-dried bites. The chewy pieces are softened with coconut glycerin. It is grain-free, with peas, tapioca, sweet potato as the starches. Flaxseed and salmon oil bring omega fatty acids, which Instinct includes to support skin and coat, and Instinct adds a probiotic blend to support digestive health.

Who it suits, and who it doesn't

It suits a healthy, active adult dog who loves variety in the bowl, and the picky eater who gets bored with plain kibble.

Instinct® PeakBoost™ High-Protein Recipe with Real Chicken is formulated to meet the nutritional levels established by the AAFCO Dog Food Nutrient Profiles for maintenance.

Calorie content

3,800 kcal/kg ... 446 kcal per cup (Instinct's label: "Calorie content (calculated): ME = 3,800 kcal/kg; 446 kcal/cup"). A cup means a standard 8-fluid-ounce dry measuring cup, filled level. It measures volume, not 8 ounces by weight, so scoop it rather than weigh it.

Feeding guidelines

Instinct's published daily amounts, by your dog's weight. Split the total across two meals.

These are starting points, not prescriptions. Instinct notes that ideal amounts depend on age, weight and activity level. For dogs over 100 lb, Instinct only says that ideal amounts depend on age, weight and activity level. Spayed or neutered and less active dogs often need the lower end of the range. Check your dog's body condition after two or three weeks... ribs easy to feel under a thin layer, a waist visible from above... and adjust. Always keep fresh water out.

Switching over

Change foods gradually over about a week. Start with roughly a quarter PeakBoost+ mixed into the old food, move to half, then three quarters, then all PeakBoost+. Going slowly gives your dog's stomach time to adjust.

Sizes, and how many cups you get

3.5 lb and 17 lb bags, which hold roughly 14 and 66 level cups. For a 50 lb adult eating 2¼ cups a day (the top of Instinct's adult range), that's about 6 days and about 4 weeks respectively. Cup counts are worked out from Instinct's published calorie figures and are close estimates, since kibble settles as a bag is handled.

Storage

Keep the food in its original bag, rolled down tight, somewhere cool and dry. If you use a bin, put the whole bag inside it rather than pouring the kibble in, so the lot number stays with the food. Because Instinct includes freeze-dried raw ingredients, wash your hands after handling the food and wash your dog's bowl after each meal.
