Know Before You Buy

Limited Ingredient Diet Real Salmon is Instinct's short-list kibble for dogs with food sensitivities. Instinct builds it on one animal protein (fish) and one vegetable (peas), and coats each piece in freeze-dried raw cod.
What's actually in it
The list really is short. Salmon meal and salmon lead, followed by peas, tapioca and canola oil. The freeze-dried cod coating comes near the end. There is no chicken fat hiding in it, no egg, no dairy and no yeast.
It is grain-free and potato-free. Instinct guarantees omega 3 and omega 6 fatty acids and vitamin C, which it includes to support skin, coat and immune health. Preservation is natural, with mixed tocopherols, citric acid and rosemary extract. If your dog has a diagnosed food allergy, work with your veterinarian on any diet change.
Who it suits, and who it doesn't
It suits an adult dog with food sensitivities who does well on fish, and families doing a careful elimination approach who want a very short ingredient list.

Calorie content
4,335 kcal/kg ... 493 kcal per cup (Instinct's label: "Calorie content (calculated): Metabolizable Energy 4,335 kcal/kg; 493 kcal/cup"). A cup means a standard 8-fluid-ounce dry measuring cup, filled level. It measures volume, not 8 ounces by weight, so scoop it rather than weigh it.
Feeding guidelines
Instinct's published daily amounts, by your dog's weight. Split the total across two meals.

These are starting points, not prescriptions. Instinct notes that ideal amounts depend on age, weight and activity level. Spayed or neutered and less active dogs often need the lower end of the range. Check your dog's body condition after two or three weeks... ribs easy to feel under a thin layer, a waist visible from above... and adjust. Always keep fresh water out.
Switching over
Change foods gradually over about a week. Start with roughly a quarter Limited Ingredient Diet mixed into the old food, move to half, then three quarters, then all Limited Ingredient Diet. Going slowly gives your dog's stomach time to adjust.
Sizes, and how many cups you get
20 lb bag, which holds roughly 80 level cups. For a 50 lb adult eating 2¼ cups a day (the top of Instinct's adult range), that's about 5 weeks. Cup counts are worked out from Instinct's published calorie figures and are close estimates, since kibble settles as a bag is handled.
Storage
Keep the food in its original bag, rolled down tight, somewhere cool and dry. If you use a bin, put the whole bag inside it rather than pouring the kibble in, so the lot number stays with the food. Because Instinct includes freeze-dried raw ingredients, wash your hands after handling the food and wash your dog's bowl after each meal.
