Know Before You Buy
- Animal proteins in this recipe: Chicken (chicken, chicken liver, chicken heart), salmon oil.
- Contains: Chicken ... Fish (salmon oil) ... Flaxseed.
- Does not contain: Beef, grains, peas, lentils or other legumes, white potatoes, egg, dairy or yeast (per the manufacturer's ingredient list).
- Not completely fish-free. Chicken is the only meat, but salmon oil is in the list.
- Life stage: Adult maintenance. Instinct's AAFCO statement is for maintenance only, so it isn't formulated as a growing puppy's diet.
The cage-free chicken medallions are Instinct's poultry option in its portioned frozen raw line. Each piece is a 1 oz. medallion, so building a meal is just counting out pieces and thawing them.
What's actually in it
Cage-free chicken, which Instinct says is raised without antibiotics or added hormones, leads, followed by chicken liver and chicken heart. Carrots, apples, sweet potatoes, butternut squash, blueberries and spinach supply the produce. Instinct states it's made without grain, corn, wheat, soy or legumes.
Salmon oil and ground flaxseed add omega fatty acids, which Instinct includes to support skin and coat. Instinct says the food is never cooked and is frozen at peak freshness.
Who it suits, and who it doesn't
It suits a healthy adult dog who does well on chicken and a family that wants raw feeding to be simple and tidy. It's also a handy way to add a little raw on top of kibble.

1,596 kcal/kg ... 45 kcal per medallion (Instinct's label: "Calorie content (calculated): ME = 1,596 kcal/kg; 45 kcal/medallion"). Instinct notes each medallion is approximately 1 oz, so there's no cup figure for this food; you count pieces instead.
Feeding guidelines
Instinct's published daily amounts, in medallions per day, by your dog's weight. Split the total across two meals.

These are starting points, not prescriptions. Instinct notes that ideal feeding amounts depend on age, weight and activity level, and that each medallion is approximately 1 oz. Spayed or neutered and less active dogs often need the lower end of the range. Check your dog's body condition after two or three weeks... ribs easy to feel under a thin layer, a waist visible from above... and adjust. Always keep fresh water out.
Switching over
Change foods gradually over about a week. Start with roughly a quarter FreshRaw mixed into the old food, move to half, then three quarters, then all FreshRaw. Going slowly gives your dog's stomach time to adjust, and that matters even more when the move is from kibble to raw.
Sizes
3 lb bag, which works out to roughly 48 medallions at about 1 oz each. For a 20 lb adult eating 12 medallions a day (the top of Instinct's 16 to 25 lb range), that's about 4 days. If you feed medallions as a topper rather than the whole meal, a bag lasts far longer.
Storage and safe handling
Keep the bag in the freezer until you need it. Instinct's label says to keep medallions frozen until ready to use, that they thaw within 1 to 2 hours in the refrigerator, and that they should be served cold. Thaw in a covered container in the refrigerator, and only what your dog will eat that day; Instinct's FAQ guidance for thawed raw in the fridge is "We suggest no longer than 24 hours."
Raw food needs the same care as raw meat in your own kitchen. Instinct's label says: "Discard uneaten food 30 minutes after serving. Wash hands and utensils after handling raw pet food." Wash your dog's bowl with hot, soapy water after each meal too.
