Fromm PurrSnickitty Chicken Delight Recipe Dry Cat Food

PurrSnickitty Chicken Delight is Fromm's newer line for the cat who turns up their nose at ordinary kibble. It's a grain-free chicken recipe from Fromm Family Foods, the family-owned company in Mequon, Wisconsin, and Fromm describes it as a blend of chicken, chicken liver and eggs with added probiotics.

What's actually in it

Chicken shows up three ways at the top of the list: fresh chicken, chicken liver and dehydrated chicken, followed by eggs. Chicken fat and a little salmon oil round out the animal side. Protein is a 36% minimum, the highest of the three PurrSnickitty dry recipes.

There are no grains. The carbohydrates come from chickpeas, peas and tapioca starch, with pea protein added. Fromm cooks the PurrSnickitty line with what they describe as a lower-and-slower process, which makes a smaller kibble with a gentle crunch that softens quickly as a cat chews. Fromm says that's meant to bring out aroma and flavor and give the mouthfeel cats like... good news if you share your home with a picky eater. Flaxseed and salmon oil add omega fatty acids, which Fromm includes to support skin and coat, and Fromm adds taurine, dried chicory root and a probiotic blend, which they include to support digestion. The preservatives are mixed tocopherols and sorbic acid.

Who it suits, and who it doesn't

It suits a fussy cat or kitten with no known food sensitivities, especially one who loves chicken. Since the AAFCO statement covers all life stages, a household with a kitten and an adult cat can share one bag, feeding each by Fromm's growth or adult column.

Fromm® PurrSnickitty™ Chicken Delight Recipe Food for Cats is formulated to meet the nutritional levels established by the AAFCO Cat Food Nutrient Profiles for All Life Stages.

Calorie content

3,811 kcal/kg ... 1,732 kcal/lb ... 415 kcal per cup. A cup means a standard 8-fluid-ounce dry measuring cup, filled level. It measures volume, not 8 ounces by weight, so scoop it rather than weigh it.

Feeding guidelines

Fromm's published daily amounts, by your cat's current weight. Use the growth column for kittens and the adult maintenance column for grown cats. Split the total across two or more meals.

These are starting points, not prescriptions. Fromm notes that kittens weighing less than four pounds and/or younger than six weeks should be fed free choice, cats that are pregnant or nursing may need two to four times more food, and spayed or neutered cats may need up to 25% less. Check your cat's body condition after two or three weeks... ribs easy to feel under a thin layer, a gentle waist visible from above... and adjust. Always keep fresh water out.

Switching over

Change foods gradually over about a week. Start with roughly a quarter PurrSnickitty Chicken Delight mixed into the old food, move to half, then three quarters, then all PurrSnickitty Chicken Delight. Going slowly gives your cat's stomach time to adjust, and cats in particular tend to accept a new food more readily when it's introduced a little at a time.

Sizes, and how many cups you get

4 lb bag, which holds roughly 17 level cups. For a 10 lb adult cat eating ½ cup a day, that's about five weeks. Cup counts are worked out from Fromm's published calorie figures and are close estimates, since kibble settles as a bag is handled.

Storage

Keep the food in its original bag, rolled down tight, somewhere cool and dry. If you use a bin, put the whole bag inside it rather than pouring the kibble in, so the lot number stays with the food.
