Fromm Nutritionals Digestive Functional Dog Treats
Know Before You Buy
- A treat, not a meal. Fromm states that this treat is intended to be fed in moderation and is not a complete diet.
- Animal proteins in this recipe: Egg (dried egg product), gelatin.
- Contains: Egg ... Grains (white rice, brown rice) ... Flaxseed.
- Does not contain: Chicken, beef, pork, fish, dairy, corn, wheat, soy, peas, lentils or potatoes (per the manufacturer's ingredient list).
- Almost meat-free, but not quite. The only animal ingredients are egg and gelatin, and Fromm doesn't name the gelatin's source, so a dog on a strict elimination diet should check with your veterinarian first.
- Life stage: Fromm describes these as suitable for dogs of all breeds and ages. As a treat, it is not formulated as a complete diet for any life stage.
Digestive treats are part of Fromm's Nutritionals line, made by Fromm Family Foods, the family-owned company in Mequon, Wisconsin. Fromm built these crunchy treats around a fiber blend of pumpkin, psyllium seed husk and ground miscanthus grass, which they include to support healthy digestion.
What's actually in it
Pumpkin is the first ingredient, followed by white rice, brown rice and tapioca starch. Psyllium seed husk, ground miscanthus grass and dried chicory root are the fiber side of the recipe, which Fromm includes to support digestive health. Flaxseed adds omega fatty acids, and fennel and L-carnitine finish the list. At 2 kcal a treat, these are the lightest of the three Nutritionals treats.
Who it suits, and who it doesn't
It suits a dog who does well on rice and pumpkin, and families who want a treat with no meat, fish or dairy on the ingredient list. It isn't the right choice for a dog avoiding egg. These are treats, not medicine, and a dog with a diagnosed health condition should be fed under a veterinarian's guidance.
