Know Before You Buy
- Animal proteins in this recipe: Whitefish, menhaden fish meal, pork fat, pork liver, salmon oil, herring meal, egg.
- Contains: Fish ... Pork ... Egg ... Grains (white rice, pearled barley, oatmeal, brown rice) ... Yeast.
- Does not contain: Chicken (including chicken fat, chicken meal, chicken broth and chicken liver), beef, lamb, dairy, corn, wheat, soy, peas, lentils or potatoes (per the manufacturer's ingredient list).
- Not a fish-only food. Pork fat and pork liver are both in the recipe, so a dog avoiding pork should skip it. It does contain egg.
- Life stage: Fromm's AAFCO statement covers maintenance only. It is not formulated for growth, so it is not a puppy food.
Whitefish & Rice is the Classic line's answer for families who want to step away from chicken without giving up grains. Whitefish is the first ingredient, rice is the main grain, and the recipe reads short and simple. It's a quiet, dependable choice for an adult dog who does better on fish.
What's actually in it
Whitefish leads, followed by menhaden fish meal. Herring meal and salmon oil add more fish further down, and dried egg product is in there too. The fat source is pork fat rather than chicken fat, and pork liver is also on the list, so the animal side is fish and pork, with no chicken at all.
The grains are white rice, pearled barley, oatmeal and brown rice, with dried plain beet pulp for fiber, and there are no potatoes, peas or lentils. Salmon oil and flaxseed add omega fatty acids, which Fromm includes to support skin and coat. Fromm adds a probiotic blend and dried chicory root, which they include to support digestion. There's no cheese in this recipe, unlike most of the Classic line.
Who it suits, and who it doesn't
It suits a healthy adult dog whose family wants a chicken-free, dairy-free, grain-inclusive food, or a dog who simply likes fish. At 377 calories per cup it sits on the moderate side, which works well for an average house dog.

Calorie content
3,521 kcal/kg ... 1,600 kcal/lb ... 377 kcal per cup. A cup means a standard 8-fluid-ounce dry measuring cup, filled level. It measures volume, not 8 ounces by weight, so scoop it rather than weigh it.

These are starting points, not prescriptions. Fromm notes that puppies, and dogs that are pregnant or nursing, may need two to four times more food, and spayed or neutered dogs may need up to 25% less. Check your dog's body condition after two or three weeks... ribs easy to feel under a thin layer, a waist visible from above... and adjust. Always keep fresh water out.
Switching over
Change foods gradually over about a week. Start with roughly a quarter Whitefish & Rice mixed into the old food, move to half, then three quarters, then all Whitefish & Rice. Going slowly gives your dog's stomach time to adjust.
Sizes, and how many cups you get
15 lb bag, which holds roughly 64 level cups. For a 50 lb active adult eating 3¼ cups a day, that's a little under three weeks. Cup counts are worked out from Fromm's published calorie figures and are close estimates, since kibble settles as a bag is handled.
Storage
Keep the food in its original bag, rolled down tight, somewhere cool and dry. If you use a bin, put the whole bag inside it rather than pouring the kibble in, so the lot number stays with the food.
