One ingredient: beef liver. Freeze-dried raw, nothing added. The entire label is two words. This is the larger bag, which is the one to buy if you are training, if you have more than one dog, or if you already know how fast the 4 oz goes.

Why liver, in plain terms

Liver is one of the most nutrient-dense foods there is, particularly for vitamin A, copper and B12. At 58% protein and only 7% fat it is also leaner than most premium treats... Dr. Marty's own pork liver treat runs 11% fat, and a bully stick or anything cheese-based is higher again.

That makes it a sensible choice for training, where you hand over a lot of small pieces, and for a dog whose weight you are keeping an eye on.

The one caution worth printing

Liver's strength is also the reason not to go overboard. It carries a great deal of vitamin A, and vitamin A is stored in the body rather than flushed out, so a dog fed large amounts of liver daily over a long stretch can accumulate too much.

That is not a reason to avoid liver treats, it is a reason to keep them as treats. The general rule vets use is that treats stay under about 10% of a dog's daily calories, and at that level liver is doing nothing but good. Dr. Marty suggests one to two pieces a day, comfortably inside it. Worth saying with the bigger bag in particular, because a larger bag quietly encourages a heavier hand.

The bag is labeled for intermittent or supplemental feeding only, the standard wording for a treat. It is not a meal and should not replace one.

Feeding and safety

One to two pieces a day, per Dr. Marty. Break them down for a small dog rather than handing over a whole piece.

The bag carries a choking hazard warning and asks you to supervise your dog while feeding, which we would repeat rather than bury. Freeze-dried liver is brittle and a dog in a hurry can take a large piece whole. Watch, and keep fresh water nearby.

Who should skip it

Any dog avoiding beef, which includes most dogs on an elimination diet... one treat can undo weeks of a food trial. If you need a liver treat for a beef-sensitive dog, Red's Rewards is the same idea in pork liver.

Storage

Reseal the bag and keep it cool and dry. Freeze-dried liver picks up moisture from the air and turns leathery if the bag is left open, which matters more with a bag this size since it will be open longer.
