Dr. Marty Red’s Rewards 4-oz 100% Freeze-Dried Raw Pork Liver Dog Treats

Dr. Marty Red's Rewards Freeze-Dried Raw Pork Liver Dog Treats, 4 oz

One ingredient: pork liver. Freeze-dried raw, nothing added.

The reason this one exists

Pork is uncommon in pet food. Walk the aisle and you will find chicken, beef, lamb, salmon, turkey and duck over and over... pork barely appears. That makes pork liver a genuinely novel protein for most dogs, which is harder to say about almost anything else on a treat shelf.

If you have a dog on a limited-ingredient food because beef or chicken causes trouble, the treat drawer is usually where the plan falls apart. Everything in it contains the thing you are avoiding. This is the bag that solves that, and it is why we stock it alongside the beef liver version rather than instead of it.

A caveat we would rather say than leave you to discover: if you are running a formal elimination trial with your vet, nothing goes in the dog except the trial diet, and that includes this. Novel is not the same as permitted. Once the trial is done and you know what the dog reacts to, pork liver becomes a very useful thing to have.

How it compares to the beef liver bag

Slightly higher protein, 60% against 58%, and noticeably richer at 11% fat against 7%. If your dog's weight is the thing you're managing, Tilly's Treasures is the leaner choice. If the protein source is the thing you're managing, this is the one.

Something worth knowing about these numbers

Dr. Marty's own website publishes 71% protein, 6% fat, 3,928 kcal/kg and 139 kcal per cup for this treat. All four of those disagree with the package.

The figures below are read off the bag in our store. We mention it because this is the sort of thing nobody checks, and if you have compared this treat against another one using numbers from a website, you may have been comparing the wrong ones.

Guaranteed analysis

• Ingredients: pork liver
• Crude Protein (min) ... 60%
• Crude Fat (min) ... 11%
• Crude Fiber (max) ... 2%
• Moisture (max) ... 7.5%
• 3,700 kcal/kg ... 156 kcal per cup

The caution that comes with any liver treat

Liver carries a great deal of vitamin A, and vitamin A is stored in the body rather than flushed out, so large amounts fed daily over a long period can accumulate. Keep liver as a treat and this never becomes an issue. The general rule vets use is that treats stay under about 10% of a dog's daily calories, and Dr. Marty suggests one to two pieces a day, which sits comfortably inside that.

The bag is labeled for intermittent or supplemental feeding only and carries a choking hazard warning. Supervise your dog while feeding, break pieces down for a small dog, and keep fresh water nearby.

Sizes

This listing is the 4 oz bag. We also stock an 8 oz.

Storage

Reseal the bag and keep it cool and dry. Freeze-dried liver takes up moisture from the air and goes leathery if the bag is left open.
