Dr. Marty Nature's Feast Beef, Salmon & Poultry Freeze-Dried Raw Cat Food

Four animal proteins and three organ meats: turkey, beef, salmon and duck, followed immediately by beef liver, turkey liver and turkey heart. This is the broader of Dr. Marty's two cat recipes, and the one to pick unless your cat has a reason to avoid one of those.

Organ meat sitting that high in the list is the point rather than an accident. Cats are strict carnivores, far more so than dogs... they are built to get vitamin A, taurine and B12 from animal tissue and they cannot make do with plant sources the way a dog can. Liver and heart are where those sit.

Something worth knowing about this line

Nature's Feast shares its ingredient list with Dr. Marty's dog foods. This recipe matches Nature's Blend Essential Wellness, and the Poultry cat food matches Sensitivity Select.

That sounds alarming and isn't. We checked all four packages. The guaranteed analyses differ between the cat and dog versions, and both cat bags carry proper AAFCO Cat Food Nutrient Profile statements. A food cannot make a cat adequacy claim without meeting cat requirements, taurine included. So the shared list is a manufacturing decision rather than a dog food in a cat bag.

Straight answer on the obvious follow-up: this bag does not print a taurine figure in its guaranteed analysis. Many cat foods do. What covers it here is the AAFCO cat adult maintenance statement, which the food cannot carry unless its taurine meets the profile. If you would rather see the number printed than rely on the statement, that is a reasonable preference and we will point you at a brand that prints it.

What else is in it

After the meat and organs: flaxseed, sweet potato, whole egg, then apple, blueberry, carrot, cranberry, pumpkin seed, spinach, kelp, ginger, sunflower seed, broccoli and kale. Mixed tocopherols, a natural vitamin E, are the only preservative. No corn, wheat, soy or added grain.

Omega-3 is guaranteed at 2.5%, mostly from the salmon and flaxseed, and vitamin A at 50,000 IU/kg. The Poultry recipe prints neither of those, which is the clearest difference between the two bags on paper.

Which of the two cat bags to choose

Take this one as the default. Go to the Poultry recipe instead if your cat needs to avoid beef, fish or egg... that one is turkey, duck, goose and quail with none of the three.

AAFCO statement

Formulated to meet the nutritional levels established by the AAFCO Cat Food Nutrient Profiles for adult maintenance. A complete diet for an adult cat, not a topper and not a kitten food.

Calorie content

4,990 kcal/kg ... 256 kcal per cup. A cup means a standard 8-fluid-ounce dry measuring cup, filled level, holding about 51 grams. It does not hold 8 ounces by weight.

Feeding guidelines

Dr. Marty's published amounts, dry and before water. Cats do better on several small meals than one large one, so split it across at least two.

Dr. Marty's own note with the chart: these are guidelines, to be adjusted for your cat's age, activity level and weight.

One caution that matters more for cats than dogs. Never crash-diet an overweight cat. A cat that stops eating, or has its food cut sharply, can develop serious liver problems within days. Weight loss in a cat should be slow and supervised by your vet.

How to rehydrate

Warm water at two parts food to one part water, three minutes, then stir. Worth experimenting with the amount... some cats want it barely damp, others closer to a pate. Leave fresh drinking water out alongside, and more so with a cat, since cats are poor drinkers by nature.

The food is raw and uncooked. Handle it like raw meat, wash hands and bowl afterwards, and don't leave a made-up portion sitting out.

Switching over

Take longer than you would with a dog. Cats attach strongly to one texture and can refuse a new food outright, and a cat that stops eating is a real problem rather than an inconvenience. Two weeks is sensible, starting with a spoonful mixed in. If your cat flatly refuses, stop and talk to us rather than waiting it out.

Sizes, and how many cups you get

5.5 oz and 12 oz, roughly 3 and 6½ level cups. For a 10 lb cat eating about 1⅛ cups a day, that is roughly two and a half days and six days.

Storage

Seal it fully after each use, cool and dry. Dr. Marty puts an opened bag at up to three months, shortened by heat and humidity.
