Two things about this treat are worth knowing before you buy, and the first is a correction we owe you. These are air-dried, not freeze-dried. We had it wrong on this listing until recently. Air-drying uses low, slow warmth to pull the moisture out, which is what gives these their crisp snap... freeze-drying would leave them lighter and more brittle. Same idea, different texture, and Dr. Marty is clear it is the air-dried process.

The second: this is cod skin, not cod fillet. That is not a downside, it is the whole point. Fish skin is where the collagen and the natural oils sit, and it crisps in a way fillet never would.

The number that makes this treat useful

Dr. Marty publishes 71% protein and 1.5% fat.

That fat figure is the reason to pay attention. Nearly every premium single-ingredient treat on our shelf is a fatty one... liver, bully sticks, most freeze-dried meats. If you have a dog on a low-fat diet, or one with a pancreatitis history, the treat aisle is a minefield and the honest answer is usually "not that one." A 1.5% fat treat is a rare thing to be able to hand someone in that position. Worth clearing it with your vet first, as with anything for a dog on a prescribed diet, but this is the one we'd point you at.

How many to give

Dr. Marty suggests one to two pieces a day. The general rule vets use is that treats should stay under about 10% of a dog's daily calories, and at 93 kcal per cup these are light enough that a couple of pieces barely registers.

These are crisp and they snap, so supervise your dog with them the same way you would with any hard chew, and break them down for a small dog rather than handing over a whole piece. Fresh water alongside, as always.

Who should skip it

Any dog with a fish allergy, obviously. And if you are running an elimination diet, fish counts as a protein... one treat can undo weeks of a trial, which is worth remembering with any single-ingredient treat.
