Stella & Chewy's Raw Coated Kibble Cage-Free Chicken Recipe for Small Breed Dogs
Smaller kibble pieces for smaller mouths, and a recipe that is quietly different from Stella's standard chicken formula in two ways worth knowing.
It has chicken cartilage in it, and the highest joint figures in the line
Chicken cartilage sits at position thirteen. It appears in none of Stella's other six Raw Coated recipes.
This is also the recipe with the highest published glucosamine and chondroitin of the seven, at 1,350 mg/kg of each against 1,200 for the standard chicken and 800 for the whitefish. We'll leave you to draw the connection; we're reporting both facts as published.
| Raw Coated recipe | Glucosamine | Chondroitin |
|---|---|---|
| Small Breed Chicken | 1,350 mg/kg | 1,350 mg/kg |
| Chicken (adult) | 1,200 | 1,200 |
| Lamb | 1,200 | 1,200 |
| Beef | 1,200 | 900 |
| Duck | 1,000 | 1,000 |
| Whitefish | 1,000 | 800 |
Stella prints the bullet industry leading levels of glucosamine & chondroitin on all seven recipes identically, across a 69% spread. This is the one where it means the most.
The recipe also contains turmeric, which again appears in none of the other six.
A note on Stella's puppy chart for this product
Two rows from the same page, for dogs of the same weight:
| Chart | Dog weight | Cups per day |
|---|---|---|
| Adults | 20-25 lb | 1¼ - 1½ |
| Puppies | 21-25 lb | 3½ - 4 |
That's roughly two and a half to three times the adult amount for the same body weight. At 445 calories a cup, four cups is about 1,780 calories a day for a 25 lb puppy.
Puppies do eat more than adults, and Stella's own guidance elsewhere says up to twice an adult's amount. This chart goes past that, and the same numbers appear on Stella's full-size bags, which suggests the large-breed puppy chart was carried onto the small-breed page.
We're not going to recommend a number we think would overfeed your puppy. Stella's chart is reproduced below exactly as published, with this warning attached. Please ask us or your vet to work out the amount instead.
The species list is clean
Chicken, chicken meal, chicken liver, chicken gizzard and chicken cartilage. Salmon oil is the only other species, as an oil rather than a protein.
That matters because it isn't true across this line. Stella's duck recipe lists turkey five times, their beef recipe has lamb meal second, and their lamb recipe contains pork meal. The chicken recipes are the only ones where the name tells the whole story.
One difference from the standard chicken recipe: this one has no chicken heart. The adult formula carries liver, heart and gizzard; this one carries liver, gizzard and cartilage.
Two legume fractions
Peas at three, lentils at four. No chickpeas, no pea protein... Stella's beef recipe carries four legume fractions in its top seven.
Their bullet says low carbohydrate diet (only 28% carbs), printed identically across all seven recipes, with no carbohydrate figure in the guaranteed analysis to support it. Their claim, not ours. Taurine is added and guaranteed at 0.2% minimum.
Two gaps on Stella's page
There is no AAFCO nutritional adequacy statement and no named life stage. On a complete dry food that's the most important line on the label. We checked twice. Combined with the puppy chart issue above, this is a food we'd want to talk to you about in person before you feed it to a growing dog. Ask us and we'll read the statement off the bag.
The "added probiotics" bullet has no number behind it. The four fermentation products are listed, but no total microorganisms guarantee is published.

Calorie content
445 kcal per cup ... 3,721 kcal/kg
Tied for the most calorie-dense of Stella's kibbles, and that matters more on a small dog than a large one. A quarter cup here is 111 calories... on a 12 lb dog that's a meaningful share of the day. Measure rather than eyeball.
Feeding guidelines, adult dogs
Cups per day, split across two meals. Stella does not state what size cup their chart is based on; the standard for dry food is a level 8-fluid-ounce dry measuring cup.
| Your dog's weight | Cups per day |
|---|---|
| 1-5 lb | ½ |
| 5-10 lb | ½ - ¾ |
| 10-15 lb | ¾ - 1 |
| 15-20 lb | 1 - 1¼ |
| 20-25 lb | 1¼ - 1½ |
| 25-30 lb | 1½ - 1¾ |
Stella's chart stops at 30 lb. Above that, their standard Cage-Free Chicken bag is the same protein with a chart that continues.
Feeding guidelines, puppies — please read the note above
| Puppy's weight | Cups per day, as Stella publishes it |
|---|---|
| 1-3 lb | ½ - 1 |
| 4-8 lb | 1 - 2 |
| 9-15 lb | 2 - 3 |
| 16-20 lb | 3 - 3½ |
| 21-25 lb | 3½ - 4 |
We think these amounts are too high for a small-breed puppy. Printed for completeness, not as a recommendation. Please ask us or your vet for a figure for your puppy.
Switching over
Stella's guidance: introduce gradually over seven to ten days, mixing with the current food and shifting the ratio. Sudden diet changes, overfeeding included, can cause digestive upset.
