Summer Nutrition Tweaks: Lighter Meals, Fresh Foods & Hydration Boosters

All Posts

Just like humans shift their diets in hot weather (bye, stew — hello, watermelon), pets benefit from summer-friendly nutrition. June marks the start of lighter meals, cooler treats, and hydration boosters that keep pets energized without overheating.

Start by assessing activity levels. Dogs who exercise more in summer may need slightly higher calories. Indoor cats might need fewer treats if they become lounge lizards in the AC. Chickens, rabbits, and goats eat differently in heat — more greens, less heavy feed.

Add hydrating foods. Wet food, broth, cucumber slices, green beans, and frozen “pupsicles” help dogs and cats stay hydrated. Rabbits appreciate crisp greens. Chickens love watermelon rinds and chilled veggies.

Support the skin and coat. Omega-3s reduce itchiness and support summer coat condition. Grooming + hydration + good nutrition = fewer summer hot spots.

Avoid heat-trigger foods. Fatty scraps, salty treats, or high-carb snacks can cause lethargy or stomach upset in heat.

If you'd like help building a summer nutrition plan, The Hungry Puppy’s Personal Pet Consultant can guide you—plus our Frequent Buyers Program saves you money on the foods you already buy regularly.

Quick Tip: Serve meals in the coolest part of your home to encourage healthy eating during heat spikes.
