Spring Travel With Pets: Car Safety, Packing Lists & Stress-Free Trips

All Posts

Spring is road trip season, and your pets are more than ready — sometimes too ready. Dogs leap into the backseat like they’re heading to Disney World, while cats… well, they usually file formal protests. Whether you’re traveling across town or across the state, prepping ahead makes the journey safer and happier for everyone involved.

Start with secure travel gear. Dogs should use crash-tested harnesses or secured carriers. Cats must travel in carriers — ideally lined with blankets that smell like home. Before you leave, stop by The Hungry Puppy to pick up travel treats, collapsible bowls, or a calming spray; they make the first leg of the trip much smoother.

Plan for stops. Dogs need breaks every 2–3 hours for stretching, hydration, and bathroom trips. Even short rides can stress some animals, so keep the temperature moderate and avoid loud music. For farm owners traveling with foals, goats, or poultry, check ventilation in trailers and secure all doors — spring winds can be sneaky.

Pack a “pet go-bag.” Include water, food, bowls, waste bags, wipes, a small towel, first aid supplies, and your pet’s medical records. Cats may prefer a cover over their carrier to reduce visual stress. If you’re staying somewhere overnight, bring your pet’s bed or a familiar-smelling item.

Keep safety top of mind. Never leave pets in parked cars — even in mild May weather. Cars heat up shockingly fast. Stay attentive to your pet’s behavior; heavy panting, drooling, or whining could indicate stress or overheating.

Whether you’re gearing up for a day trip or planning a longer getaway, The Hungry Puppy has road-trip-ready supplies, plus free local delivery on orders over $49 so you can prep without extra errands.
