Monthly Pet Check-In: Sun Exposure, Paws, Hydration & Behavior Review

All Posts

As May wraps up, it’s the perfect time for a quick wellness check across your entire animal family. Seasonal routines shift quickly, and early detection of changes helps prevent summer problems. A once-a-month scan keeps dogs, cats, and even backyard animals comfortable and thriving.

Start with sun exposure. Dogs spending more time outside may need shade and early-morning walks. Cats lounging in windows can overheat surprisingly fast. Chickens, goats, and horses rely on shade structures as temperatures rise.

Check paws, coats, and skin. Pavement heat, allergens, and shedding can all cause irritation. Look for redness, cracks, hotspots, or itchy spots. Cats may need extra brushing to prevent hairballs, and dogs often need paw balm this time of year.

Review hydration and diet. Pets often need more water in May but may not drink enough. Refresh bowls multiple times per day and adjust diet if activity has increased. Outdoor animals need constant access to clean, cool water.

Watch behavior shifts. Zoomies may increase, naps may move to sunny patches, and appetite may rise or fall slightly. Mark any changes that feel out of character — from restlessness to clinginess — so you can discuss them with your vet if needed.

If you discover you’re running low on spring supplies — from hydrating treats to paw balms to fresh bedding — The Hungry Puppy offers free local delivery on orders over $49 in Monmouth & Ocean Counties. A quick restock keeps your pets happy as we glide into summer.
