Memorial Day is the unofficial kickoff to summer — BBQs, family, sunshine, and pets underfoot hoping for dropped food. But pets also face sneaky risks: heat, overstimulation, and enough grilling hazards to give a vet nightmares. Keeping the day safe doesn’t mean killing the fun — just planning smart.
Mind the heat. Early heat waves happen in May, and dogs can overheat fast. Provide shade, cool water, and breaks indoors. Cats should stay inside if crowds or noise make them skittish. Chickens, goats, and horses need shaded areas and plenty of cool water as well.
Secure the grill zone. Dogs will absolutely test their “leave it” skills around grill drippings. Cats may try to jump onto surfaces while you’re distracted. Keep a three-foot “no pet zone” and gently redirect curious sniffers. Remember: skewers, onions, fatty meats, and alcohol are all no-gos.
Watch overstimulation. Guests, music, smells — it’s a lot for pets. Give nervous animals a quiet room or soft crate to decompress. For animals like goats or horses, loud gatherings or fireworks may elevate stress; keep their routines calm and predictable.
Stay prepared. Keep trash covered, food secured, and gates closed. Fireworks or sudden noises can spook dogs, sending them bolting through open doors. Consider ID tags and microchips to reduce risk.
