Introducing Hydration for our Favorite Companions

All Posts dog blog my dog hates me pet humor the hungry puppy

The early summer heat is already sweeping through New Jersey, and undoubtedly, your pets feel it too. As pet parents, it's our job to ensure that our animal companions, especially our dogs and cats, stay refreshingly hydrated during these sweltering months. At The Hungry Puppy, we believe that keeping your beloved pets adequately hydrated is an essential part of their health and overall well-being, especially in hot weather.

In the natural world, the bodies of dogs and cats are tuned to get most of their water from the food they eat. That's why it's essential to adjust their diet appropriately with the seasons. Consider incorporating wet food into their diets as these are generally made up of 60 to 80% water. Brands like Taste of the Wild and Canidae offer grain-free options for canines, and Fussie Cat and even Wellness have excellent options for our feline friends. Keep in mind; a hydrated pet is a happy pet.

Besides the diet adjustment, always remember to keep plenty of fresh water available for your pets, especially on hot days, and make sure they always have access to it. Whether you are home or out, having multiple water bowls throughout the house can ensure they get enough water. If you notice your pet's water bowl is empty, it's our responsibility to fill it up, just like hitting the hydration station at the gym after a workout.

As you are ensuring your animals are keeping their liquids up at home, don't overlook the need to keep them hydrated when you take them out for a walk or to The Hungry Puppy's free Dog Park. Grab a portable, collapsible water bowl, or a pet-specific water bottle that can provide a quick drink for your furry friends while they frolic and play.

Some pets, especially our dogs, love to hydrate more creatively. If your pet loves to play in the water, use this opportunity to your advantage. A small pet-friendly kiddie pool can provide them with both a fun recreational moment and a resourceful way to stay hydrated.

Lastly, be watchful for signs that your pet might be dehydrated. Excessive panting, lethargy, and sunken eyes are a few of the signs that your dog or cat might be succumbing to the heat and could use a replenishing drink. With our hydration tips, you can ensure your pets get the fluids they need to stay cool, healthy, and energetic all summer long. After all, a hydrated pet is a happy pet!
