Beef, then whole ground salmon. This is the only patty recipe in Stella's freeze-dried line built on two animal proteins instead of one, and that is the whole reason to pick it or avoid it.

Two proteins, which cuts both ways

For a dog that eats anything, a dual-protein recipe is simply a more varied diet in a single bag. Beef and fish are quite different foods and the recipe draws on both.

For a dog on an elimination diet, this is the wrong bag. If you are avoiding beef, this is out. If you are avoiding fish, this is also out. Single-protein recipes like Dandy Lamb or Absolutely Rabbit are what that job calls for... we would rather say so here than have you find out after you've opened it.

Stella puts the recipe at 95% beef and fish, nutrient-rich organs and bone, using grass-fed beef and wild-caught salmon. Note that the salmon is listed as whole ground salmon, meaning the whole fish rather than a fillet trim.

Something worth catching there: Surf 'N Turf is more calorie-dense than Super Beef despite having less fat. Fat percentage alone doesn't tell you calorie density, which is exactly why we print both numbers on every page rather than one.

This is a rich food. A dog with a pancreatitis history, or one on a vet-prescribed low-fat diet, needs that vet's view first.

The organ list

Beef heart, beef liver, beef bone. Three beef organ components alongside the muscle meat and the whole salmon.

If organ content is specifically why you feed raw, Stella's Super Beef runs a longer list on that front... liver, kidney, heart and tripe. Neither is the better food; they are different recipes and you should pick on what your dog needs.

What else is in there

Pumpkin seed, then organic cranberries, spinach, broccoli, beets, carrots, squash and blueberries. Fenugreek seed, kelp, a vitamin and mineral package, added taurine.

This recipe is pea-free, lentil-free and potato-free. True of this recipe specifically... it is not true of everything Stella & Chewy's makes, so check each product rather than trusting the brand name.

The probiotics, named

Four fermentation products in the ingredient list: Pediococcus acidilactici, Lactobacillus acidophilus, Bifidobacterium longum and Bacillus coagulans. Named because the organisms are checkable and "contains probiotics" isn't.

Feeding guidelines

Stella's published amounts for adult dogs, patties per day, split across two meals.

Stella notes puppies may need up to twice the adult amount, and to consult a veterinarian for pregnant and nursing dogs. A chart is a starting point... check your dog's body condition after two or three weeks and adjust.

How to serve it

Straight from the bag or rehydrated with warm water. Stella suggests bone broth as the liquid if you want to go further, and we stock their Bountiful Bone Broth.

Switching over

Stella's guidance is to introduce gradually over seven to ten days, mixing with the current food and shifting the ratio across. They note that sudden diet changes and overfeeding can both cause digestive upset.
