Stella & Chewy's Raw Coated Kibble with Wholesome Grains, Beef Recipe with Pumpkin & Quinoa

Oven-baked kibble coated in freeze-dried raw, in a 3.5 lb bag. Its real selling point is a combination that's hard to find, and there are three things on the label worth knowing before you buy it.

Poultry-free and legume-free at the same time

We checked this list against every category: no chicken, no turkey, no duck. No peas, no lentils, no chickpeas, no pea protein, no potato. The starches are oatmeal at three, pearled barley at four, quinoa at eight and coconut flour further down.

Plenty of foods are poultry-free. Plenty are legume-free. Getting both in one bag usually means a grain-inclusive red-meat recipe, and there aren't many. That's the reason to consider this one.

Lamb meal is the second ingredient

On a food called Beef Recipe. The published order of the first six:

1. Beef
2. Lamb Meal
3. Oatmeal
4. Pearled Barley
5. Pork Meal
6. Beef Liver

Lamb meal sits ahead of both grains and ahead of the beef liver. Pork meal is fifth. There is also salmon oil at sixteen. None of lamb, pork or fish is named anywhere on the product or in Stella's description bullets.

For most dogs that's simply varied protein. If you're avoiding lamb, pork or fish, or running an elimination diet, it's the wrong bag and the name won't tell you. Come and talk to us.

The beef content itself is good: beef, beef liver, beef fat, beef kidney and beef tripe. Tripe in a kibble is unusual.

27% protein, the lowest in Stella's dry range

Nine points below Stella's grain-free Red Meat at a similar calorie count. If protein level is what you shop on, that gap is real and nothing on the bag front signals it.

Stella's own guaranteed analysis doesn't back their own bullets

Their bullets for this product claim taurine added, rich in omega fatty acids and added probiotics for optimal digestion.

Their published guaranteed analysis has four lines: protein, fat, fiber and moisture. No taurine guarantee. No omega-3 or omega-6. No probiotic count.

Taurine and four probiotic fermentation products are in the ingredient list, so the ingredients are there. What's missing is any guaranteed amount. By comparison, Stella's Raw Blend Wholesome Grains Red Meat publishes ten analysis lines including taurine at 0.2%, both omegas, glucosamine, chondroitin and a 10,000,000 CFU/lb probiotic count.

So the claims on this page are not backed by a published number, and we're not going to repeat them as if they were. If those guarantees matter to you, the Raw Blend version publishes them and we stock it in 22 lb.

Raw Coated is not the same as Raw Blend

Easy to confuse, and Stella sells both. Raw Coated, which this is, is oven-baked kibble with a freeze-dried raw coating on each piece. Raw Blend is that same coated kibble plus separate freeze-dried raw chunks mixed into the bag.

Raw Blend is the fuller version of the two. Worth knowing when you're comparing prices between them.

One gap we're not going to paper over

There is no AAFCO nutritional adequacy statement and no named life stage. On a complete dry food that's the most important line on the label. We checked twice. Ask us and we'll read it off the bag, especially for a puppy or a pregnant dog.

A 3.5 lb bag works out to roughly 11 cups, or about 4,900 calories... six or seven days for a 40 lb dog.

Feeding guidelines, adult dogs

Cups per day, split across two meals. Stella does not state what size cup their chart is based on; the standard for dry food is a level 8-fluid-ounce dry measuring cup.

Note this chart runs noticeably lighter than Stella's other kibbles at almost the same calories per cup. Their Raw Blend Wholesome Grains Red Meat is 447 kcal/cup and feeds a 15-30 lb dog 1 to 1¾ cups; this one is 443 kcal/cup and feeds the same dog ¾ to 1½. We've printed Stella's chart as published... if your dog sits in that range, start at the higher end and watch their condition.

Feeding guidelines, puppies

Stella adds that puppies may need up to twice the amount listed for an adult. Since Stella publishes no life stage for this food, please ask us to check the bag before feeding it to a puppy.

Switching over

Stella's guidance: introduce gradually over seven to ten days, mixing with the current food and shifting the ratio. Sudden diet changes, overfeeding included, can cause digestive upset.

Size
