Stella & Chewy's Raw Coated Kibble Grass-Fed Lamb Recipe Dry Dog Food
This recipe has the best organ content and the only published probiotic count in Stella's entire kibble range. It also has pork in it, which the name doesn't mention. All three are worth knowing.
Five lamb organ components, including spleen
Lamb liver, lamb heart, lamb kidney and lamb spleen, alongside lamb and lamb meal. Spleen in a dry food is close to unheard of... it appears in one other Stella product and essentially nothing else on the shelf.
If organ content is part of why you pay premium kibble prices, no other Raw Coated recipe comes close to this one.
The only Stella kibble that tells you how many probiotics
All seven Raw Coated recipes carry the bullet added probiotics for optimal digestion. Six of them publish no number at all behind it.
This one does: not less than 10,000,000 CFU per pound of total microorganisms, from Pediococcus acidilactici, Lactobacillus acidophilus, Bifidobacterium longum and Bacillus coagulans, named individually in the guaranteed analysis.
Stella's own label footnotes it, and we'll pass the footnote on with the number: total microorganisms are not recognized as an essential nutrient by the AAFCO Dog Food Nutrient Profiles. It's a real, guaranteed, measured figure, and it is not a claim about what it will do for your dog. But a count you can check beats a claim you can't, and this is the only one in the line that gives you one.
There is pork in it, ahead of every lamb organ
The published order of the first nine:
- Lamb
- Lamb Meal
- Lentils
- Peas
- Sunflower Oil
- Tomato Pomace
- Beef Fat
- Pork Meal
- Pea Protein
Lamb liver doesn't appear until twelve. So beef fat and pork meal both sit ahead of all five lamb organ ingredients. There's also salmon meal at sixteen and salmon oil further down.
Four species in total: lamb, beef, pork and salmon. Only the lamb is named on the product.
For a dog that eats everything, that's variety. But people reach for a lamb food specifically to get away from beef, and this one contains beef fat. If you're avoiding beef, pork or fish, or running an elimination diet, this is the wrong bag. Stella's freeze-dried Dandy Lamb patties are lamb only... come and talk to us.
The lowest protein and highest fat in the line
30% protein and 16% fat.
| Raw Coated recipe | Protein | Fat | Omega-3 | kcal/cup |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Whitefish | 35% | 13.5% | 0.70% | 430 |
| Duck | 34% | 13% | 1.00% | 445 |
| Chicken (adult) | 33% | 14% | 0.50% | 435 |
| Beef | 32% | 15% | 0.30% | 434 |
| Lamb | 30% | 16% | 0.75% | 438 |
Five points less protein than the whitefish recipe. If protein level is what you're shopping on, that's a real gap and nothing on the bag front signals it. The omega-3 is good, second only to the duck.
Three legume fractions
Lentils at three, peas at four, pea protein at nine.
Stella's bullet says low carbohydrate diet (only 28% carbs), printed identically on all seven recipes, with no carbohydrate figure in the guaranteed analysis to support it. Their claim, not ours. Stella does add taurine and guarantee it at 0.2% minimum, which is the figure to bring to your vet if legume-containing diets are something you've discussed.
One gap on Stella's page
There is no AAFCO nutritional adequacy statement and no named life stage. On a complete dry food that's the most important line on the label. We checked twice. Ask us and we'll read it off the bag, especially for a puppy or a pregnant dog.

Feeding guidelines, adult dogs

| Your dog's weight | Cups per day |
|---|---|
| 2-8 lb | ¼ - ¾ |
| 8-15 lb | ¾ - 1 |
| 15-30 lb | 1 - 1¾ |
| 30-40 lb | 1¾ - 2¼ |
| 40-50 lb | 2¼ - 2½ |
| 50-60 lb | 2½ - 3 |
| 60-70 lb | 3 - 3¼ |
| 70-80 lb | 3¼ - 3¾ |
| 80-90 lb | 3¾ - 4 |
| 90-100 lb | 4 - 4¼ |
| Over 100 lb | 4¼, plus ½ cup per additional 10 lb |
Feeding guidelines, puppies
| Puppy's weight | Cups per day |
|---|---|
| 1-5 lb | ½ - 1 |
| 6-10 lb | 1 - 2 |
| 11-20 lb | 2 - 3 |
| 21-40 lb | 3 - 4 |
| 41-60 lb | 4 - 6 |
Stella adds that puppies may need up to twice the amount listed for an adult. Since Stella publishes no life stage for this food, please ask us to check the bag before feeding it to a puppy.
Every chart is a starting point. Check your dog's body condition after two or three weeks and adjust.
Switching over
Stella's guidance: introduce gradually over seven to ten days, mixing with the current food and shifting the ratio. Sudden diet changes, overfeeding included, can cause digestive upset.
