Stella & Chewy's Raw Coated Kibble Cage-Free Chicken Recipe for Puppies
This is formulated as a puppy food and the guaranteed analysis shows it. There is also something missing from Stella's published label that matters more on a puppy food than on anything else they make, so we'll deal with that first.
Stella does not publish an AAFCO growth statement for this product
On a food sold for puppies, the AAFCO nutritional adequacy statement is the single most important line on the label. It is what tells you the food is formulated for growth rather than adult maintenance, and whether that includes growth of large size dogs (70 lbs or more as an adult), which is a separate and harder claim.
It matters because a large-breed puppy needs tightly controlled calcium while its skeleton forms. Too much is a real problem, not a theoretical one.
Stella publishes no AAFCO statement on this page, and no life stage. We checked twice, searching specifically for the large-breed growth wording. It is not there.
Here is the honest read. The formulation looks like a growth diet: it's the only recipe in the Raw Coated line that publishes calcium and phosphorus guarantees, at 1.10% and 1.00%, and the only one with added DHA, extra vitamin E and L-carnitine. Those are exactly the markers you'd expect. But a formulation that looks right is not the same as a published adequacy statement, and we are not going to tell you it's approved for growth when the manufacturer hasn't said so in print.
So, two practical answers:
Ask us and we'll read the adequacy statement off the bag in the shop. The printed bag almost certainly carries one even though the website doesn't, and for a puppy that's worth the phone call.
If you have a large-breed puppy and want certainty today, Stella's freeze-dried Remarkable Red Meat patties publish the full statement: all life stages, including growth of large size dogs 70 lbs or more as an adult. It's the only Stella product on our shelf that does, and it's a different format and price point, but it's the one we can stand behind in print for a big puppy.
What the puppy formulation actually adds
Against Stella's adult chicken recipe:
| Adult chicken | Puppy chicken | |
|---|---|---|
| Crude Protein | 33% | 36% |
| Crude Fat | 14% | 16% |
| Calcium | not published | 1.10% min |
| Phosphorus | not published | 1.00% min |
| DHA | not published | 0.10% min |
| Vitamin E | not published | 175 IU/kg min |
| Omega-3 | 0.50% | 0.80% |
| Glucosamine / Chondroitin | 1,200 / 1,200 | 1,300 / 1,300 |
| kcal/cup | 435 | 438 |
More protein, more fat, more omega-3, and the calcium and phosphorus actually declared. The ingredient list also adds L-carnitine, dicalcium phosphate and choline chloride, none of which are in the adult recipe, and moves salmon oil up to position seven.
That's a real puppy formulation, not an adult food with a puppy label.
What's in it
Cage-free chicken, chicken meal, then peas and lentils, chicken fat, tomato pomace, salmon oil, chicken heart, chicken liver and chicken gizzard.
Three chicken organ components, which is good. Chicken is the only land animal in it... the sole other species is salmon, as oil. For a kibble that's a clean species profile, and it's worth knowing if you're watching what a young dog is first exposed to.
Two legume fractions, peas and lentils. Stella's bullet says low carbohydrate diet (only 28% carbs), printed identically on all seven Raw Coated recipes, with no carbohydrate figure in the guaranteed analysis to support it. Their claim, not ours. Taurine is added and guaranteed at 0.2% minimum.

Feeding guidelines, puppies 1 to 6 months
Cups per day, split across three or four meals at this age. Stella does not state what size cup their chart is based on; the standard for dry food is a level 8-fluid-ounce dry measuring cup.
| Puppy's weight | Cups per day |
|---|---|
| 1-4 lb | ½ - 1 |
| 5-10 lb | 1 - 3 |
| 11-20 lb | 1½ - 5 |
| 21-30 lb | 2½ - 7 |
| 31-40 lb | 3½ - 9 |
| 41-50 lb | 4½ - 10 |
Note how wide those ranges are... the 31-40 lb row spans 3½ to 9 cups, which is a difference of about 2,400 calories a day. A chart that broad is a starting point and nothing more. Please weigh your puppy regularly and work the amount out with your vet, rather than picking a number from the middle.
Feeding guidelines, puppies 6 to 12 months
| Puppy's weight | Cups per day |
|---|---|
| 5-10 lb | ¾ - 1 |
| 11-20 lb | 1¼ - 1½ |
| 21-30 lb | 2 - 2¼ |
| 31-40 lb | 2½ - 2¾ |
| 41-50 lb | 3 - 3½ |
| 51-60 lb | 3½ - 3¾ |
| 61-70 lb | 4 - 4½ |
| 71-80 lb | 4½ - 5 |
| 81-90 lb | 4¾ - 5¾ |
| 91-100 lb | 5 - 6 |
| Over 100 lb | 6, plus ¼ cup per additional 10 lb |
The six-to-twelve-month ranges are much tighter and more usable. Check body condition every couple of weeks and adjust.
Switching over
Stella's guidance: introduce gradually over seven to ten days, mixing with the current food and shifting the ratio. Sudden diet changes, overfeeding included, can cause digestive upset. Puppies are more prone to that than adults, so take the full ten days.
