Stella & Chewy's Raw Coated Kibble Cage-Free Chicken Recipe Dry Dog Food

Of Stella's seven Raw Coated kibble recipes, this one has the cleanest ingredient list. That's the main reason to pick it.

Chicken, and nothing else but salmon oil

We read all seven lists line by line, because the names in this line are not reliable:

Raw Coated recipe Animal species actually in it
Chicken chicken, plus salmon oil
Whitefish whitefish, mackerel, salmon, cod
Beef beef, lamb meal at #2, salmon meal
Lamb lamb, beef fat, pork meal, salmon
Duck duck once, turkey five times, goose, salmon

The chicken recipes are the only ones where the name tells you the whole story. Salmon oil is the single other species, and it's an oil rather than a protein source. If you're avoiding fish entirely, that's the one thing to know.

Three chicken organ components

Chicken liver, chicken heart and chicken gizzard, alongside the chicken and chicken meal. That's more organ content than Stella's duck or whitefish recipes carry.

Then peas and lentils, chicken fat, tomato pomace, the organic produce, kelp, a full vitamin and mineral package, added taurine.

Two legume fractions, not four

Peas at three, lentils at four. No chickpeas, no pea protein.

Worth knowing because Stella's beef recipe carries four separate legume fractions in its top seven. Same line, same price point, materially different construction.

Stella's bullet reads low carbohydrate diet (only 28% carbs), printed identically on all seven recipes, and no carbohydrate figure appears in the guaranteed analysis to support it. That's their claim, not ours. On the other hand Stella does add taurine and guarantee it at 0.2% minimum, which is a deliberate choice and the figure to bring to your vet if legume-containing diets are something you've discussed.

Where it sits

Raw Coated recipe Protein Fat Gluc / Chond kcal/cup
Whitefish 35% 13.5% 1,000 / 800 430
Duck 34% 13% 1,000 / 1,000 445
Chicken 33% 14% 1,200 / 1,200 435
Small Breed Chicken 33% 14% 1,350 / 1,350 445
Beef 32% 15% 1,200 / 900 434
Lamb 30% 16% 1,200 / 1,200 438

Middle of the line on protein and fat, upper end on the joint figures. A sensible everyday choice for a dog with no particular dietary constraint.

Two gaps on Stella's page

There is no AAFCO nutritional adequacy statement and no named life stage. On a complete dry food that's the most important line on the label. We checked twice. Ask us and we'll read it off the bag, especially for a puppy or a pregnant dog.

The "added probiotics" bullet has no number behind it. The four fermentation products are in the ingredient list, but unlike Stella's Grass-Fed Lamb kibble this recipe publishes no total microorganisms guarantee. Probiotics with no count is a claim you can't check.

Calorie content

435 kcal per cup ... 3,687 kcal/kg

Dense for a kibble. If you're coming from a cheaper bag, measure to this chart rather than keeping your old scoop.

Feeding guidelines, adult dogs

Cups per day, split across two meals. Stella does not state what size cup their chart is based on; the standard for dry food is a level 8-fluid-ounce dry measuring cup.

Your dog's weight Cups per day
2-8 lb ¼ - ¾
8-15 lb ¾ - 1
15-30 lb 1 - 1¾
30-40 lb 1¾ - 2¼
40-50 lb 2¼ - 2½
50-60 lb 2½ - 3
60-70 lb 3 - 3¼
70-80 lb 3¼ - 3¾
80-90 lb 3¾ - 4
90-100 lb 4 - 4¼
Over 100 lb 4¼, plus ½ cup per additional 10 lb

Feeding guidelines, puppies

Puppy's weight Cups per day
1-5 lb ½ - 1
6-10 lb 1 - 2
11-20 lb 2 - 3
21-40 lb 3 - 4
41-60 lb 4 - 6

Stella adds that puppies may need up to twice the amount listed for an adult. They also make a dedicated puppy version of this recipe with declared calcium and phosphorus and added DHA... worth looking at if you're feeding a growing dog, and worth reading our note on it about the missing adequacy statement.

Every chart is a starting point. Check your dog's body condition after two or three weeks and adjust.

Switching over

Stella's guidance: introduce gradually over seven to ten days, mixing with the current food and shifting the ratio. Sudden diet changes, overfeeding included, can cause digestive upset.
