Stella & Chewy's Raw Coated Kibble Grass-Fed Beef Recipe Dry Dog Food
Baked kibble coated in freeze-dried raw. The organ content is the best thing about it and the second ingredient is the thing you most need to know.
Lamb meal is the second ingredient
On a food called Grass-Fed Beef. Here's the published order of the first eight:
- Beef
- Lamb Meal
- Chickpeas
- Peas
- Salmon Meal
- Lentils
- Pea Protein
- Beef Heart
Lamb meal outranks every beef ingredient except the beef itself, and salmon meal sits at five. Neither lamb nor fish is named anywhere on the product.
This recipe is poultry-free, which is accurate and genuinely useful if chicken is what you're avoiding. But it is not a single-protein beef food, and if you're avoiding lamb or fish, or running an elimination diet, it's the wrong bag. Come and talk to us.
The organ content is genuinely strong
Beef heart, beef liver, beef kidney and beef tripe. Four organ components in a baked kibble is more than most brands attempt, and tripe in particular is rare outside raw food.
If organ content is part of why you pay premium kibble prices, this recipe delivers it.
Four legume fractions in the top seven
Chickpeas at three, peas at four, lentils at six, pea protein at seven. That's the heaviest legume load of the seven Raw Coated recipes:
| Raw Coated recipe | Legume fractions in the top seven |
|---|---|
| Beef | 4 (chickpeas, peas, lentils, pea protein) |
| Duck | 3 (peas, lentils, pea protein) |
| Lamb | 3 (lentils, peas, pea protein) |
| Chicken (all three) | 2 (peas, lentils) |
| Whitefish | 2 (peas, lentils) |
Stella's bullet reads low carbohydrate diet (only 28% carbs). They print that same line on all seven recipes regardless of formula, and no carbohydrate figure appears in the guaranteed analysis to support it. That's their claim, not ours.
On the other side: Stella adds taurine and guarantees it at 0.2% minimum. If legume-heavy diets are something you've discussed with your vet, that's the number to bring.
The joint figures don't match the claim as well here
Stella's bullet says industry leading levels of glucosamine & chondroitin on all seven recipes. On this one the glucosamine is 1,200 mg/kg but the chondroitin is 900, the second-lowest in the line and the only recipe where the two figures don't match.
Not a problem, just not what the identical bullet implies. Stella's Small Breed Chicken runs 1,350 of each.
Where it sits
| Raw Coated recipe | Protein | Fat | kcal/cup |
|---|---|---|---|
| Whitefish | 35% | 13.5% | 430 |
| Duck | 34% | 13% | 445 |
| Chicken (adult) | 33% | 14% | 435 |
| Beef | 32% | 15% | 434 |
| Lamb | 30% | 16% | 438 |
Two gaps on Stella's page
There is no AAFCO nutritional adequacy statement and no named life stage. On a complete dry food that's the most important line on the label. We checked twice. Ask us and we'll read it off the bag, especially for a puppy or a pregnant dog.
The "added probiotics" bullet has no number behind it. The four fermentation products are in the list, but unlike Stella's Grass-Fed Lamb kibble this recipe publishes no total microorganisms guarantee.

Feeding guidelines, adult dogs
Cups per day, split across two meals. Stella does not state what size cup their chart is based on; the standard for dry food is a level 8-fluid-ounce dry measuring cup.
| Your dog's weight | Cups per day |
|---|---|
| 2-8 lb | ¼ - ¾ |
| 8-15 lb | ¾ - 1 |
| 15-30 lb | 1 - 1¾ |
| 30-40 lb | 1¾ - 2¼ |
| 40-50 lb | 2¼ - 2½ |
| 50-60 lb | 2½ - 3 |
| 60-70 lb | 3 - 3¼ |
| 70-80 lb | 3¼ - 3¾ |
| 80-90 lb | 3¾ - 4 |
| 90-100 lb | 4 - 4¼ |
| Over 100 lb | 4¼, plus ½ cup per additional 10 lb |
Feeding guidelines, puppies
| Puppy's weight | Cups per day |
|---|---|
| 1-5 lb | ½ - 1 |
| 6-10 lb | 1 - 2 |
| 11-20 lb | 2 - 3 |
| 21-40 lb | 3 - 4 |
| 41-60 lb | 4 - 6 |
Stella adds that puppies may need up to twice the amount listed for an adult. Since Stella publishes no life stage for this food, please ask us to check the bag before feeding it to a puppy.
Every chart is a starting point. Check your dog's body condition after two or three weeks and adjust.
Switching over
Stella's guidance: introduce gradually over seven to ten days, mixing with the current food and shifting the ratio. Sudden diet changes, overfeeding included, can cause digestive upset.
