Stella & Chewy's Raw Blend Small Breed Red Meat Recipe Grain Free Dry Dog Food

This is Stella's Red Meat recipe in a smaller kibble, for smaller mouths. Same food, same numbers, different piece size and a feeding chart built around small dogs.

Before anything else, there is something on Stella's published puppy chart for this product that we think you need to see.

Stella's small-breed puppy chart does not match their own adult chart

Here are two rows from the same page, for dogs of the same weight:

Chart Dog weight Cups per day
Adults 20-25 lb 1¼ - 1½
Puppies 21-25 lb 3½ - 4

That is roughly two and a half to three times the adult amount for the same body weight. At 442 calories a cup, four cups is about 1,770 calories a day for a 25 lb puppy.

Puppies do eat more than adults, and Stella's own guidance elsewhere says up to twice an adult's amount. This chart goes well past that. The likeliest explanation is that the large-breed puppy chart from Stella's full-size bags was carried onto the small-breed page... the numbers are identical in shape.

We are not going to print a number we think would overfeed your puppy. If you are feeding a small-breed puppy, please ask us or your vet to work out the amount rather than using that row. We have reproduced Stella's chart below exactly as published, with this warning attached, because hiding it would be worse.

It is the same recipe as the full-size bag

We compared both ingredient lists line by line. They are identical in the same order with two exceptions: the small-breed list omits non-organic blueberries and omits potassium chloride. Organic blueberries are in both.

The guaranteed analysis matches on every value, and the calorie content is identical at 442 kcal per cup and 3,760 kcal/kg.

So you are buying a smaller kibble, not a different food. If you have a small dog that struggles with large pieces, that is a real reason to choose this. If kibble size is not an issue, the full-size bag is the same recipe and comes in a 22 lb that works out cheaper per pound.

Pork is the second ingredient. Salmon is the fifth.

Stella markets this as beef, lamb and venison. The published order of the first thirteen:

  1. Beef
  2. Pork Meal
  3. Peas
  4. Lentils
  5. Salmon Meal
  6. Chickpeas
  7. Pea Protein
  8. Sunflower Oil
  9. Lamb
  10. Tomato Pomace
  11. Beef Liver
  12. Beef Kidney
  13. Free-Range Venison

Pork meal and salmon meal both outrank the lamb and venison the product is named for, and neither pork nor fish is named anywhere on the bag front.

For most dogs that is varied protein and no cause for concern. If you are avoiding pork or fish, this food contains meaningful amounts of both. For an elimination diet this is the wrong bag... come and talk to us.

Four legume fractions in the top seven

Peas, lentils, chickpeas and pea protein at positions three, four, six and seven.

Stella's bullet says low carbohydrate diet (only 28% carbs). We pass that on as their claim and note that no carbohydrate figure appears in the guaranteed analysis to support it. Grain-free kibble replaces grain with something, and here it is legumes.

Cutting the other way: Stella adds taurine and guarantees it at 0.2% minimum, a deliberate choice not every grain-free kibble makes. If legume-heavy grain-free diets are something you have discussed with your vet, that is the number to bring. If you would rather skip legumes entirely, Stella's Wholesome Grains Cage-Free recipe is legume-free and potato-free.

The organ content is genuinely good

Beef liver, beef kidney, beef heart and beef tripe, alongside free-range venison and lamb. For a baked kibble that is an unusually complete organ profile and it is the real argument for this food over a conventional bag.

One gap on Stella's page we are not going to paper over

There is no AAFCO nutritional adequacy statement. Stella publishes none for this product and names no life stage. On a complete dry food that is the most important line on the label. We checked twice; it is not there.

Combined with the puppy chart problem above, that makes this a food we would want to talk to you about in person before you feed it to a growing dog. Ask us and we will read the adequacy statement off the bag.

Guaranteed analysis

  • Crude Protein (min) ... 36%
  • Crude Fat (min) ... 14.5%
  • Crude Fiber (max) ... 6%
  • Moisture (max) ... 12%
  • Omega 6 Fatty Acids (min) ... 3%
  • Omega 3 Fatty Acids (min) ... 0.3%

  • Chondroitin Sulfate (min) ... 900 mg/kg
  • Total Microorganisms (min) ... 10,000,000 CFU/lb

Stella footnotes the starred lines on their own label: omega fatty acids, taurine, glucosamine, chondroitin and total microorganisms are not recognized as essential nutrients by the AAFCO Dog Food Nutrient Profiles. We pass the footnote on with the figures.

Calorie content

442 kcal per cup ... 3,760 kcal/kg

That is dense for a kibble, and it matters more on a small dog than a large one. A quarter cup here is 110 calories... on a 12 lb dog that is a significant share of the day. Measure to the chart rather than eyeballing it.

Feeding guidelines, adult dogs

Cups per day, split across two meals. Stella does not state what size cup their chart is based on; the standard for dry food is a level 8-fluid-ounce dry measuring cup.

Your dog's weight Cups per day
1-5 lb ½
5-10 lb ½ - ¾
10-15 lb ¾ - 1
15-20 lb 1 - 1¼
20-25 lb 1¼ - 1½
25-30 lb 1½ - 1¾

Stella's chart stops at 30 lb. Above that, their full-size Red Meat bag is the same recipe and carries a chart that continues.

Feeding guidelines, puppies — please read the warning above

Puppy's weight Cups per day, as Stella publishes it
1-3 lb ½ - 1
4-8 lb 1 - 2
9-15 lb 2 - 3
16-20 lb 3 - 3½
21-25 lb 3½ - 4

We think these amounts are too high for a small-breed puppy, for the reasons set out at the top of this page. Printed here for completeness, not as a recommendation. Please ask us or your vet for a figure for your puppy.

Switching over

Stella's guidance: introduce gradually over seven to ten days, mixing with the current food and shifting the ratio. Sudden diet changes, overfeeding included, can cause digestive upset.

Sizes

3.5 lb and 10 lb.
