Stella & Chewy's Raw Blend Free Range Lamb Recipe Grain Free Dry Dog Food

Baked kibble coated in freeze-dried raw, with freeze-dried raw pieces mixed through. The lamb organ content here is the best thing about it, and the species count is the thing you most need to know before buying it.

Six animal species are in this bag

Stella's page calls this "Lamb, Goat & Elk." The published ingredient list carries all three, plus three more:

Species Where it appears Named on the product?
Lamb 1, 2, 10, 14, 15, 16 Yes
Beef (beef fat) 6 No
Goat 8 In the subtitle
Elk 13 In the subtitle
Pork (pork meal) 17 No
Salmon (salmon oil) 28 No

Beef fat sits sixth, ahead of the goat. Pork meal sits seventeenth, ahead of a good deal of the recipe. Neither is named anywhere on the bag front.

For a dog that eats everything, that's variety and no problem at all. But people reach for a lamb food specifically to get away from beef or chicken, and this one contains beef fat. If you are avoiding beef, pork or fish, or running an elimination diet, this is the wrong bag... come and talk to us about what actually qualifies. Stella's freeze-dried Dandy Lamb patties are lamb only, if a true single protein is the point.

Five lamb organ components, which is the real draw

Lamb liver, lamb heart, lamb kidney, lamb spleen, plus lamb meal alongside the muscle meat.

Spleen in a kibble is close to unheard of. It turns up in one other Stella product we've looked at and essentially nothing else on the shelf. If organ content is why you pay for a premium bag, this recipe genuinely delivers it in a way most kibbles do not.

It's the leanest in the Raw Blend line

31% protein, 14% fat, 432 calories a cup.

Raw Blend recipe Protein Fat kcal/cup
Red Meat 36% 14.5% 442
Cage-Free 35% 14% 434
Free Range Lamb 31% 14% 432
Wholesome Grains Cage-Free 29% 17% 435

Five points less protein than the Red Meat recipe at almost identical calories. Worth knowing if you're switching between them and assumed they were interchangeable.

It also carries the highest omega-3 figure in the grain-free line at 0.6% minimum, double the Red Meat recipe's 0.3%, and the joint-support figures are even at 1,100 mg/kg of both glucosamine and chondroitin.

About the legumes

Lentils and peas sit third and fourth. Sun-cured alfalfa and fenugreek seed, both legume-family, appear further down.

That's a shorter legume list than Stella's Red Meat recipe, which carries four separate fractions in its top seven including chickpeas and pea protein. Grain-free kibble replaces grain with something, and here it's two legumes rather than four.

Stella adds taurine and guarantees it at 0.2% minimum, which is a deliberate choice and not every grain-free kibble makes it. If legume-heavy grain-free diets are something you've discussed with your vet, that's the figure to bring. If you'd rather skip legumes entirely, Stella's Wholesome Grains Cage-Free recipe is legume-free and potato-free.

One gap on Stella's page we're not going to paper over

There is no AAFCO nutritional adequacy statement. Stella publishes none for this product and names no life stage. On a complete dry food that's the most important line on the label... it's what tells you whether the food is formulated for adult maintenance, for growth, or for all life stages. We checked twice. It isn't there.

We won't invent one. Ask us and we'll read it off the bag in the shop, especially if this is going to a puppy or a pregnant dog, where life stage actually matters.

Trace amounts of these ingredients may be present. Worth knowing if you're avoiding grain for a sensitive dog rather than by preference.

Calorie content

432 kcal per cup ... 3,692 kcal/kg

Dense for a kibble. If you're coming from a cheaper bag, measure to this chart rather than keeping your old scoop.

Feeding guidelines, adult dogs

Cups per day, split across two meals. Stella does not state what size cup their chart is based on; the standard for dry food is a level 8-fluid-ounce dry measuring cup.

Your dog's weight Cups per day
2-8 lb ¼ - ¾
8-15 lb ¾ - 1
15-30 lb 1 - 1¾
30-40 lb 1¾ - 2¼
40-50 lb 2¼ - 2¾
50-60 lb 2¾ - 3
60-70 lb 3 - 3½
70-80 lb 3½ - 3¾
80-90 lb 3¾ - 4
90-100 lb 4 - 4½
Over 100 lb 4½, plus ½ cup per additional 10 lb

Feeding guidelines, puppies

Puppy's weight Cups per day
1-5 lb ½ - 1
6-10 lb 1 - 2
11-20 lb 2 - 3
21-40 lb 3 - 4
41-60 lb 4 - 6

Stella adds that puppies may need up to twice the amount listed for an adult. Since Stella publishes no life stage for this food, as above, please ask us to check the bag before feeding it to a puppy.

Every chart is a starting point. Check your dog's body condition after two or three weeks and adjust.

Switching over

Stella's guidance: introduce gradually over seven to ten days, mixing with the current food and shifting the ratio. Sudden diet changes, overfeeding included, can cause digestive upset.
