Stella & Chewy's Gourmet Stew, Duck, Carrot & Spinach Recipe — Case of 12

Shredded duck in a slow-cooked broth with organic carrots and spinach. One thing about the ingredient order decides whether this is the right can for your dog.

Chicken appears three times, and the liver is chicken

Stella's published order, first nine:

  1. Cage-Free Duck
  2. Duck Broth
  3. Chicken Broth
  4. Cage-Free Chicken
  5. Dried Egg
  6. Organic Carrots
  7. Organic Spinach
  8. Tapioca
  9. Chicken Liver

Chicken broth sits third and chicken meat fourth, both ahead of everything but the duck itself. And Stella's bullet says chunks of chicken liver ... the organ meat in this duck recipe is chicken, not duck.

People buy duck food for one reason above all others: their dog reacted to chicken. If that's you, this is the wrong can, and the name on the front will not tell you. If you're running an elimination diet with your vet, same answer.

Come and talk to us... we can go through what actually qualifies. For a dog that eats poultry happily, this is a good food and the duck is real.

There's also salmon oil near the end of the list, so that's three species plus egg.

Dried egg is the fifth ingredient

In this and all six Gourmet recipes. If your dog reacts to egg, that rules out the whole line.

Where it sits in the line

Gourmet recipe Protein Fat kcal/can
Pâté Chicken & Chicken Liver 10% 5% 477
Pâté Duck & Chicken 10% 5% 458
Pâté Puppy Chicken & Salmon 11% 4.5% 452
Stew Chicken, Carrot & Broccoli 8.5% 4.5% 392
Stew Duck, Carrot & Spinach 8.5% 4.5% 370
Stew Beef, Green Bean & Sweet Potato 7% 4% 347

Middle of the range. Because the stews are lighter than the pâtés, you feed more of them: a 45 lb dog takes 2½ to 3 cans of this a day against 2 to 2⅓ of the Chicken Pâté. Worth factoring in before you buy cases.

Pâté and Stew are different foods, not just textures

  • Stews are 81% moisture, pâtés are 78%
  • Pâtés run 20 to 37% more calories per kilogram
  • Stews contain vegetables, thyme, rosemary and guar gum. Pâtés contain none of those
  • Pâtés add sodium phosphate and celery powder

If you want vegetables and herbs in the bowl, the stews have them. If you want calorie density in a smaller volume, the pâtés win.

8.5% protein is not what it looks like

This is 81% moisture. Take the water out and the 8.5% protein becomes roughly 45% on a dry-matter basis, above most kibble. Wet foods always read low against dry food because of the water.

One small difference from the other stews

This recipe uses two broths and no added water ... duck broth and chicken broth, where the beef and chicken stews both list "water sufficient for processing." A minor construction detail, but it's part of why this one carries more calories per can than the beef.

Feeding guidelines, adult dogs

Stella's instruction: when fed as a complete and balanced meal, feed ½ to ⅔ can for every 4 to 8 lbs of body weight per day.

Your dog's weight Cans per day
1-10 lb ¼ - 1
11-20 lb 1 - 1½
21-30 lb 1½ - 2
31-40 lb 2 - 2½
41-50 lb 2½ - 3
51-60 lb 3 - 3⅓
61-70 lb 3⅓ - 3¾
71-80 lb 3¾ - 4¼
81-90 lb 4¼ - 4⅔
91-100 lb 4⅔ - 5
Over 100 lb 5, plus ⅓ can per additional 10 lb

Stella adds that puppies may need up to twice the adult amount. Their label also offers it as a topper... used that way, use a fraction of the chart and take the calories off the food underneath.

Storage

Refrigerate after opening and use within a few days. Easy-open lid, no can opener needed.

Case

Case of 12. Stella does not publish the can size on their page... ask us and we'll read it off the label.

On the label statement

Stella describes this as complete and balanced, but publishes no AAFCO nutritional adequacy statement and names no life stage on their page. We checked twice. Ask us and we'll read it off the can, particularly if this is going to be your dog's only food.
