Stella & Chewy's Gourmet Stew, Beef, Green Bean & Sweet Potato Recipe — Case of 12

Shredded beef and beef liver in a slow-cooked broth with green beans and sweet potato. There is something in the ingredient list that will surprise most people, so we'll lead with it.

There is bream in this beef stew

At position ten. Bream is a fish.

There's also salmon oil further down, which makes two fish species in a recipe named for beef. Neither is mentioned on the front of the can or in any of Stella's bullets.

For most dogs that's a non-issue. If you're avoiding fish, or running an elimination diet, this is the wrong can and nothing on it would tell you. Of the six Gourmet recipes, only the Chicken & Chicken Liver Pâté contains no fish at all.

The beef content itself is genuine: beef, beef broth and beef liver, with beef first.

Two more things worth knowing about the list

Dried egg is the fourth ingredient, and it's in all six Gourmet recipes. If your dog reacts to egg, that rules out the whole line.

Stella's "made without" list on this recipe omits legumes, where the other five all include it. That's internally consistent, because green beans are legumes and they're in the name... but it means the Gourmet line's legume-free messaging isn't uniform, and this is the one recipe where it doesn't apply.

It is the lightest can in the Gourmet line

Gourmet recipe Protein Fat kcal/can
Pâté Chicken & Chicken Liver 10% 5% 477
Pâté Duck & Chicken 10% 5% 458
Pâté Puppy Chicken & Salmon 11% 4.5% 452
Stew Chicken, Carrot & Broccoli 8.5% 4.5% 392
Stew Duck, Carrot & Spinach 8.5% 4.5% 370
Stew Beef, Green Bean & Sweet Potato 7% 4% 347

Lowest protein, lowest fat and fewest calories of the six. That means you feed more of it: a 45 lb dog takes 2¾ to 3¼ cans of this a day as a complete meal, against 2 to 2⅓ cans of the Chicken Pâté. Worth doing that arithmetic before you buy cases.

On the other side, if you want a lighter wet food for a dog whose weight you're managing, this is the one in the line that fills a bowl for the fewest calories.

Pâté and Stew are different foods, not just textures

People assume the two Gourmet lines are one recipe in two consistencies. They aren't:

  • Stews are 81% moisture, pâtés are 78%
  • Pâtés run 20 to 37% more calories per kilogram
  • Stews contain vegetables, thyme, rosemary and guar gum. Pâtés contain none of those
  • Pâtés add sodium phosphate and celery powder

If you want vegetables and herbs in the bowl, the stews have them. If you want calorie density in a smaller volume, the pâtés win.

7% protein is not what it looks like

This is 81% moisture. Take the water out and the 7% protein becomes roughly 37% on a dry-matter basis. Wet foods always read low against kibble because of the water... but note this is still the lowest of the Gourmet six once converted.

Feeding guidelines, adult dogs

Stella's instruction: when fed as a complete and balanced meal, feed ½ to ¾ can for every 4 to 8 lbs of body weight per day.

Your dog's weight Cans per day
1-10 lb ¼ - 1
11-20 lb 1 - 1¾
21-30 lb 1¾ - 2¼
31-40 lb 2¼ - 2¾
41-50 lb 2¾ - 3¼
51-60 lb 3¼ - 3¾
61-70 lb 3¾ - 4
71-80 lb 4 - 4½
81-90 lb 4½ - 5
91-100 lb 5 - 5¼

Stella's chart continues above 100 lb but their published figure for that row is garbled on their own page, so we've left it out rather than guess. If you have a dog over 100 lb, ask us and we'll work it out.

Stella adds that puppies may need up to twice the adult amount. Their label also offers it as a topper... used that way, use a fraction of the chart and take the calories off the food underneath.

Storage

Refrigerate after opening and use within a few days. Easy-open lid, no can opener needed.

Case

Case of 12. Stella does not publish the can size on their page... ask us and we'll read it off the label.

On the label statement

Stella describes this as complete and balanced, but publishes no AAFCO nutritional adequacy statement and names no life stage on their page. We checked twice. Ask us and we'll read it off the can, particularly if this is going to be your dog's only food.
