Stella & Chewy's Gourmet Pâté Puppy, Chicken & Salmon Recipe — Case of 12
A smooth pâté with chunks through it, made for puppies. It carries the highest protein minimum in the Gourmet line at 11%. It also has three gaps on Stella's own page that we think matter more on a puppy food than on anything else they make.
Three things Stella's page doesn't give you
1. There is no AAFCO nutritional adequacy statement. On a food sold for puppies, that's the line that matters most... it's what tells you the food is formulated for growth, and whether that includes large-breed puppies, which is a separate and harder claim. We searched the page twice specifically for it. It isn't there, and no life stage is named in AAFCO terms.
2. The feeding text on this puppy product says "for adult dogs." Stella's own words, printed directly above two puppy-specific charts: serve as a complete and balanced meal or as a topper for adult dogs. That's almost certainly copy carried over from their adult pâtés, but it's on the puppy page and we're not going to pretend it isn't.
3. The DHA claim has no guarantee behind it. Stella's bullet says optimal protein and DHA from tuna oil. Tuna oil is genuinely in the ingredient list. But the guaranteed analysis has four lines and no DHA minimum ... so there's no number telling you how much. Their FreshMade Pork & Quinoa and Beef, Barley & Turkey both publish a DHA guarantee at 0.08%; this one doesn't.
None of that makes it a bad food. It means we can't answer the most important questions about it from the manufacturer's website, and on a puppy food we'd want to. Ask us and we'll read the can in the shop before you commit.
One more thing in the ingredient list
Stella's published list for this recipe contains no vitamin A supplement and no vitamin D3 supplement, where all five of their other Gourmet recipes list both.
We are not telling you this food lacks those vitamins, and you shouldn't conclude that. We have a clear precedent with this brand: their published Tantalizing Turkey list dropped a zinc line that the actual bag panel does carry. Website lists here have been incomplete before.
We're telling you what we found and offering to check. Ask us and we'll read the real panel off the can.
Three species, two named
Cage-free chicken, chicken broth, wild-caught salmon, chicken liver, dried egg... and tuna oil near the end. Tuna is a third species and it isn't in the name.
Also worth knowing: dried egg is the fifth ingredient, and it's in all six Gourmet recipes. If your dog reacts to egg, that rules out the whole line.
Highest protein in the Gourmet range
| Gourmet recipe | Protein | Fat | kcal/can |
|---|---|---|---|
| Pâté Puppy Chicken & Salmon | 11% | 4.5% | 452 |
| Pâté Chicken & Chicken Liver | 10% | 5% | 477 |
| Pâté Duck & Chicken | 10% | 5% | 458 |
| Stew Chicken, Carrot & Broccoli | 8.5% | 4.5% | 392 |
| Stew Duck, Carrot & Spinach | 8.5% | 4.5% | 370 |
| Stew Beef, Green Bean & Sweet Potato | 7% | 4% | 347 |
Worth noticing: it's the highest in protein but lower in fat than both adult pâtés, at 4.5% against 5%. That's an unusual shape for a growth formula, where you'd normally expect more fat rather than less. Another thing to raise with your vet.
Pâté and Stew are different foods, not just textures
People assume the two Gourmet lines are the same recipe in different consistencies. They aren't:
- Pâtés are 78% moisture, stews are 81%
- Pâtés run 20 to 37% more calories per kilogram
- Stews contain vegetables, herbs and guar gum. Pâtés contain none of those ... no vegetables at all beyond celery powder
- Pâtés add sodium phosphate and celery powder
If you want vegetables in the bowl, the stews have them. If you want calorie density in a smaller volume, the pâtés win.
11% protein is not what it looks like
This is 78% moisture. Take the water out and the 11% protein becomes 50% on a dry-matter basis, well above any kibble. Wet foods always read low against dry food because of the water.
Full ingredient list
Cage-Free Chicken, Chicken Broth, Wild-Caught Salmon, Chicken Liver, Dried Egg, Tapioca, Sunflower Oil, Tricalcium Phosphate, Minerals (Zinc Oxide, Reduced Iron, Sodium Selenite, Manganese Sulfate, Copper Amino Acid Complex, Potassium Iodide), Calcium Sulfate, Salt, Potassium Chloride, Sodium Phosphate, Vitamin E Supplement, Niacin Supplement, D-calcium Pantothenate, Thiamine Mononitrate, Beta-Carotene, Biotin, Riboflavin Supplement, Vitamin B12 Supplement, Pyridoxine Hydrochloride, Folic Acid, Tuna Oil, Choline Chloride, Magnesium Sulfate, Celery Powder.
Reproduced exactly as Stella & Chewy's publishes it, including ending where theirs ends. See the note above about vitamins A and D3.
Stella's "made without" list: grains, legumes, by-product meals, artificial colors, flavors or preservatives. They also claim 95% protein from animal sources.
One small thing: the bullet says chunks of chicken breast, but the ingredient list names only "Cage-Free Chicken" with no breast specified. That bullet appears on all three pâtés and no list names chicken breast.

Feeding guidelines, puppies over 4 months
| Puppy's weight | Cans per day |
|---|---|
| Up to 10 lb | ¼ - 1 |
| 11-20 lb | 1 - 1⅔ |

| 91-100 lb | 5 - 5½ |
| Over 100 lb | 5½, plus ½ can per additional 10 lb |
These are large numbers. A 30 lb puppy under four months is told to eat up to 4⅓ cans a day, which is more than a third of a case. Please weigh your puppy regularly and work the amount out with your vet rather than picking a figure from the middle of a range.
