Stella & Chewy's Gourmet Pâté, Duck & Chicken Recipe — Case of 12

A smooth pâté with chunks through it. Both named proteins lead the ingredient list, which sounds like a low bar until you read the rest of the range.

Duck first, chicken second, and the name tells the truth

Cage-free duck, cage-free chicken, duck broth, tapioca, chicken liver. Both animals on the front of the can are the first two ingredients.

Compare that to Stella's Duck, Carrot & Spinach Stew, where chicken broth sits third, chicken fourth, and the liver is chicken on a duck-named product. This pâté discloses both birds and leads with both. If you want duck but your dog is fine with chicken, this is the honest option in the Gourmet line.

If chicken is what you're avoiding, this is of course the wrong can... and so is the duck stew, for the same reason. Come and talk to us.

No fish in it

Only two of the six Gourmet recipes are fish-free: this one and the Chicken & Chicken Liver Pâté. The three stews all carry salmon oil, the Beef stew also contains bream, and the Puppy pâté has salmon and tuna oil.

One caveat across the whole line: dried egg is the sixth ingredient here and appears in all six recipes. If your dog reacts to egg, the Gourmet line is out entirely.

Where it sits

Gourmet recipe Protein Fat kcal/can Fish?
Pâté Chicken & Chicken Liver 10% 5% 477 No
Pâté Duck & Chicken 10% 5% 458 No
Pâté Puppy Chicken & Salmon 11% 4.5% 452 Yes
Stew Chicken, Carrot & Broccoli 8.5% 4.5% 392 Yes
Stew Duck, Carrot & Spinach 8.5% 4.5% 370 Yes
Stew Beef, Green Bean & Sweet Potato 7% 4% 347 Yes

Second-most calorie-dense of the six. 24% more calories per can than Stella's own Duck stew, so if you've been feeding the duck stew and switch to this, you feed noticeably fewer cans for the same dog. A 45 lb dog takes 2 to 2⅓ cans of this against 2½ to 3 of the stew.

Pâté and Stew are different foods, not just textures

  • Pâtés are 78% moisture, stews are 81%
  • Pâtés run 20 to 37% more calories per kilogram
  • Stews contain vegetables, thyme, rosemary and guar gum. Pâtés contain none of those ... no vegetables at all beyond celery powder
  • Pâtés add sodium phosphate and celery powder

If you want vegetables and herbs in the bowl, the stews have them. If you want calorie density in a smaller volume, the pâtés win.

10% protein is not what it looks like

This is 78% moisture. Take the water out and the 10% protein becomes roughly 45% on a dry-matter basis, above most kibble. Wet foods always read low against dry food because of the water.

Two small things we noticed

This is the only Gourmet recipe whose published list contains no biotin, where the other five all include it. We're not drawing a conclusion from that... Stella's published lists on other products have been incomplete before. Ask us and we'll read the actual can panel.

And Stella's bullet says chunks of chicken breast, while the ingredient list names only "Cage-Free Chicken" with no breast specified. That bullet appears on all three pâtés and no list names chicken breast.

Case

Case of 12. Stella does not publish the can size on their page... ask us and we'll read it off the label.

On the label statement

Stella describes this as complete and balanced, but publishes no AAFCO nutritional adequacy statement and names no life stage on their page. We checked twice. Ask us and we'll read it off the can, particularly if this is going to be your dog's only food.
