A smooth pâté with chunks through it. Of Stella's six Gourmet recipes, this is the one with the shortest, cleanest species list and the most calories in the can.
The only Gourmet recipe with no fish in it
We read all six lists. Five of them contain fish of some kind ... salmon oil in the three stews and the Duck & Chicken pâté, salmon and tuna oil in the Puppy pâté, and bream in the Beef stew.
This one doesn't. Cage-free chicken, chicken broth, chicken liver and dried egg. Chicken is the only animal protein in it.
If you're avoiding fish, this is the Gourmet can to buy, and it's the only one we can say that about.
One caveat that applies to the whole line: dried egg is the fourth ingredient, and it's in all six recipes. If your dog reacts to egg, the Gourmet line is out entirely.

37% more calories per can than the Beef stew. That's money if you feed wet as a complete diet: a 45 lb dog eats 2 to 2⅓ cans of this a day against 2¾ to 3¼ of the beef. Fewer cases for the same calories.
Pâté and Stew are different foods, not just textures
People assume the two Gourmet lines are one recipe in two consistencies. They aren't:
- Pâtés are 78% moisture, stews are 81%
- Pâtés run 20 to 37% more calories per kilogram
- Stews contain vegetables, thyme, rosemary and guar gum. Pâtés contain none of those ... no vegetables at all beyond celery powder
- Pâtés add sodium phosphate and celery powder
If you want vegetables and herbs in the bowl, the stews have them. If you want calorie density in a smaller volume, the pâtés win. This one wins hardest.
10% protein is not what it looks like
This is 78% moisture. Take the water out and the 10% protein becomes roughly 45% on a dry-matter basis, above most kibble. Wet foods always read low against dry food because of the water.
One small thing on the bullets
Stella's bullet says chunks of chicken breast. The ingredient list names only "Cage-Free Chicken" with no breast specified. That bullet appears on all three pâtés and no list names chicken breast anywhere.
Not a problem with the food... we mention it because we read the lists line by line and we'd rather hand you what we found.
