Stella & Chewy's Surf 'N Turf Frozen Raw Dinner Patties

Raw beef and whole ground salmon patties, frozen right after production. Stella puts the recipe at 95% beef and fish, organs and bone.

The only frozen recipe that pairs red meat with fish

Beef, whole ground salmon, beef heart, beef liver, beef bone. Salmon sits in second position, which means there is a real amount of it in there rather than a token inclusion at the back of the list.

"Whole ground salmon" is the term to notice. That's the entire fish rather than a fillet trim or a meal, so the skin and bone go in with it.

Two species are in it, beef and salmon, so this is not a single-protein food. If you're working through proteins one at a time, Super Beef is the beef recipe without the fish.

The driest of the frozen recipes

At 65% moisture this is the lowest-water frozen recipe Stella makes... every other one runs 68% to 72%. Slightly more food, slightly less water, for the same box weight.

It is also the lowest in calories per kilo of the four red-meat and poultry recipes, at 1,853 kcal/kg.

Why the protein number looks low next to the freeze-dried

Because this food is 65% water and the freeze-dried version is about 5%. Stella's freeze-dried page publishes a second "rehydrated" analysis showing what the dried patties become once the water goes back in, and it lines up with the figures on this page.

Same recipe, water in or water out. A 15% frozen patty is not a weaker food than a 40-something-percent dried one. What differs is price per pound of food, freezer space, and shipping... frozen is cheaper on the same recipe but is pickup and local delivery only. Freeze-dried costs more, keeps in a cupboard, and ships free over $75.

Two things on Stella's label we won't paper over

Crude fiber is printed as a minimum. Stella's page reads "Crude Fiber (min.) 2.00%." Fiber is a maximum guarantee by convention, and every other Stella raw page we've read prints it as (max.). We've reproduced their figure below but labeled it the way the convention requires, because publishing fiber as a minimum would be telling you the opposite of what the guarantee means. The 2.00% number itself is theirs and is unchanged.

Vitamin D3 is missing from the published list. The ingredient list on Stella's page runs Vitamin A Supplement straight into Vitamin B12 Supplement, skipping the Vitamin D3 Supplement that appears in that slot on every other Stella raw page we've checked. We looked for it twice and it isn't there.

We are not going to tell you this food lacks vitamin D, because we don't believe that's what's happened. Stella's website has dropped single ingredient lines before that the actual bag carries... it happened with a zinc line on another recipe. A complete-diet raw food without D3 would be a formulation problem, not a typo, and the far likelier explanation is a missing line of web copy. But we're showing you the list as published rather than helpfully inserting an ingredient Stella didn't print. If it matters to you, ask and we'll read the box.

The rest of the recipe

Pumpkin seed, organic cranberries, spinach, broccoli, beets, carrots, squash and blueberries. Fenugreek seed, kelp, four probiotic strains, a vitamin and mineral package, added taurine. Pea-free, lentil-free and potato-free.

Handling raw food safely

From Stella's own published guidance:

  • Defrost overnight in a covered container in the refrigerator. To thaw faster, seal the food in a zip-top bag or glass bowl and submerge in warm water
  • Never cook, heat or microwave it
  • Once thawed, patties keep in the refrigerator up to two days
  • Do not refreeze once thawed. Patties can be broken up after thawing if you prefer
  • Wash your hands before and after handling it
  • Use a clean dish every time, and clean any utensils or surfaces the raw food touches
  • Served food can sit out up to two hours... discard anything left after that

None of that appears on Stella's product page... it comes from their separate feeding-frozen-food article. If there are small children or anyone immune-compromised in the house, talk to us and to your doctor before switching to raw.

Calorie content

418 kcal per 8 oz patty ... 1,853 kcal/kg

Stella also publishes a 78 kcal figure for a 1.5 oz patty of this recipe, but they list no small-patty package size for it... this recipe comes in large patties only. We've left the small-patty figure out of the chart below for that reason.

Feeding guidelines

Stella's published amounts for adult dogs, per day, split across two meals. Patties are about 8 oz.

Your dog's weight Patties/day
5 lb ¼ - ½
10 lb ½
15 lb ¾
20 lb 1
40 lb 1¾
60 lb 2½
80 lb 3¼
100 lb 3½

An 8 oz patty is a lot of food for a 5 lb dog to divide accurately, which is the practical reason the small sizes exist on other recipes. For a very small dog this recipe means cutting patties, or choosing one of the recipes that comes in 1.5 oz patties instead.

Every chart is a starting point. Check your dog's body condition after two or three weeks and adjust.

Switching over

Stella's guidance: seven to ten days, mixing with the current food and shifting the ratio. Sudden changes and overfeeding both cause digestive upset.

Sizes

Stella lists this recipe in a 6 lb box of roughly 8 oz patties. Unlike the beef, chicken, lamb and poultry recipes, there is no 1.5 oz small-patty size and no 12 lb box for Surf 'N Turf. There is also no morsels version of this recipe.

On the label statement

Stella does not publish the formal AAFCO nutritional adequacy statement or the life stage on their website for any frozen or freeze-dried raw product, so we can't tell you from here which life stage it's approved for. Ask us and we'll read it off the box rather than guess.
