Stella & Chewy's Duck Duck Goose Frozen Raw Dinner Patties

Raw poultry patties built on duck, cage-free turkey and goose, frozen right after production. Stella puts the recipe at 95% poultry, organs and bone.

Three poultry species, and no chicken

Duck with ground bone, cage-free turkey, turkey liver, goose, turkey gizzard. That's the whole animal portion.

There is no chicken in it, which is the practical reason most people reach for this recipe. Chicken is the most common protein in American dog food by a wide margin, so a dog who has to avoid it ends up with a short list of options. This is one of them, and it stays entirely within poultry rather than jumping to beef or fish.

Worth being precise though: this is poultry without chicken, not a single-protein food. Three bird species are in it. If you're working through proteins one at a time to isolate something, a recipe with three birds in it won't tell you much... the single-species frozen recipes are Super Beef, Chewy's Chicken, Dandy Lamb and Absolutely Rabbit.

Two things Stella's own pages disagree on

We cross-checked this list against the other forms of the same recipe, and found two discrepancies worth putting in front of you rather than quietly smoothing over.

Turkey heart and salt. Neither appears on this frozen list. Both appear on the list Stella publishes for the freeze-dried Duck Duck Goose. We checked the frozen morsels page too, and it matches this one... no heart, no salt. So the two frozen forms agree with each other and disagree with the freeze-dried.

"Magnesium Proteinate." This page lists Magnesium Proteinate in the trace-mineral run. Every other Stella raw page we've read, including the frozen Duck Duck Goose morsels, reads Manganese Proteinate in that exact position. Manganese is the mineral that belongs in that chelate series. We're reproducing the list below as Stella publishes it, but we think this one is a typo on their page and we're not going to pretend otherwise.

Neither of these is a reason not to buy the food. They're both reasons to ask us to read the actual box if the detail matters to you, which we're happy to do.

Why the protein number looks low next to the freeze-dried

Because this food is 70% water and the freeze-dried version is about 5%. Stella's freeze-dried page publishes a second "rehydrated" analysis showing what those dried patties become once the water goes back in, and it matches the frozen figures here.

Same recipe, water in or water out. A 15% frozen patty is not a weaker food than a 40-something-percent dried one. What actually differs is price per pound of food, freezer space, and shipping... frozen is cheaper on the same recipe but is pickup and local delivery only. Freeze-dried costs more, keeps in a cupboard, and ships free over $75.

The rest of the recipe

Pumpkin seed, organic cranberries, spinach, broccoli, beets, carrots, squash and blueberries. Fenugreek seed, kelp, four probiotic strains, a full vitamin and mineral package, added taurine. Pea-free, lentil-free and potato-free.

Handling raw food safely

From Stella's own published guidance:

• Defrost overnight in a covered container in the refrigerator. To thaw faster, seal the food in a zip-top bag or glass bowl and submerge in warm water
• Never cook, heat or microwave it
• Once thawed, patties keep in the refrigerator up to two days
• Do not refreeze once thawed. Patties can be broken up after thawing if you prefer
• Wash your hands before and after handling it
• Use a clean dish every time, and clean any utensils or surfaces the raw food touches
• Served food can sit out up to two hours... discard anything left after that

None of that appears on Stella's product page... it comes from their separate feeding-frozen-food article, which is the only place they publish it. If there are small children or anyone immune-compromised in the house, talk to us and to your doctor before switching to raw.

That makes this the second most calorie-dense frozen recipe, just behind Dandy Lamb.

Feeding guidelines

Stella's published amounts for adult dogs, per day, split across two meals. Small patties are about 1.5 oz; large are about 8 oz.

Every chart is a starting point. Check your dog's body condition after two or three weeks and adjust.

Switching over

Stella's guidance: seven to ten days, mixing with the current food and shifting the ratio. Sudden changes and overfeeding both cause digestive upset.

Sizes

3 lb box of roughly 1.5 oz patties, and 6 lb and 12 lb boxes of roughly 8 oz patties. Small patties portion finely for a small dog; large patties take less freezer space per pound.

There is also a frozen Duck Duck Goose morsels version... same recipe and same calorie density, loose pieces measured by the cup instead of counted.

On the label statement

Stella's page calls this a 100% complete and balanced diet, but they do not publish the formal AAFCO nutritional adequacy statement or the life stage on their website for any frozen or freeze-dried raw product. We won't repeat a marketing phrase as though it were the AAFCO statement, because they're not the same thing. Ask us and we'll read the actual box.
