Stella & Chewy's Chewy's Chicken Frozen Raw Dinner Morsels
Raw cage-free chicken in loose frozen pieces you scoop by the cup, rather than patties you count. Stella puts the recipe at 95% chicken, organs and bone.
Morsels or patties? The nutrition is identical
| Morsels | Patties | |
|---|---|---|
| Crude Protein (min) | 15.50% | 15.50% |
| Crude Fat (min) | 9.00% | 9.00% |
| Crude Fiber (max) | 2.00% | 2.00% |
| Moisture (max) | 72.00% | 72.00% |
| kcal/kg | 1,460 | 1,460 |
Identical on every line. So the choice is about portioning, not nutrition:
- Morsels suit a dog whose amount doesn't land neatly on a patty, a dog whose portion changes as it grows or slims, and anyone topping another food rather than feeding a full raw meal. You measure them
- Patties suit a settled routine where you grab two and walk away. You count them
Four ingredients the morsels list doesn't show
Here we have to be straight with you. Stella's published ingredient list for these morsels is four items shorter than the list for the identical-nutrition patties. Missing are dried kelp, sodium phosphate, mixed tocopherols and choline chloride.
The mixed tocopherols one is the eyebrow-raiser, because that's the preservative... which would mean this list shows no preservative at all.
We looked for them twice and they are not on the page. We are not telling you this is a different formula, because we don't think it is. Every guaranteed-analysis line and the calorie figure match the patties exactly, and a recipe that genuinely dropped kelp and choline chloride would almost certainly shift somewhere in those numbers. Stella's website has also dropped single ingredient lines before that the actual bag carries... it happened with a zinc line on another recipe.
The likeliest explanation by a distance is incomplete web copy on the morsels page. But we print what the manufacturer prints rather than helpfully pasting in the patties list, so the list below is theirs as published. If any of those four matter to you, ask us and we'll read the box in front of you.
Single-species poultry
Chicken with ground bone, chicken liver, chicken gizzard. Chicken is the only animal species in it, with nothing hidden behind a vague "poultry" or "meat meal" term.
Then pumpkin seed, organic cranberries, spinach, broccoli, beets, carrots, squash and blueberries. Fenugreek seed, four probiotic strains, a full vitamin and mineral package, added taurine. Pea-free, lentil-free and potato-free.
The leanest of the frozen range
At 9% fat and 1,460 kcal/kg this is the lightest frozen recipe Stella makes. Two consequences:
First, you feed more of it. A 40 lb dog eats 4 cups a day of this where it would eat 3 cups of the lamb. Work that into your cost per day before comparing box prices.
Second, it's the gentlest of the six to introduce. If you're bringing a dog onto frozen raw for the first time and you don't know how it'll go, this is the recipe we'd start with rather than the lamb.
What a cup of these actually weighs
Stella publishes 194 kcal per cup and 1,460 kcal per kilo. Together those mean a measured cup of these morsels weighs about 4.7 oz, or roughly 133 grams.
That's our calculation from Stella's numbers rather than something they publish, so treat it as close rather than exact. By cup we mean a standard measured 8 oz dry measuring cup, level, not heaped... a cup of frozen raw is a good deal heavier than a cup of kibble.
Why the protein number looks low next to the freeze-dried
Because this food is 72% water and the freeze-dried version is about 5%. Stella's freeze-dried Chewy's Chicken page publishes a second "rehydrated" analysis showing what the dried food becomes once the water goes back in: 15% protein, 9% fat, 72% moisture. Those line up with this page almost exactly... the frozen guarantee reads 15.5% protein against the rehydrated 15%, half a percentage point apart, which we'd rather show you than round away.
Same recipe, water in or water out. A 15.5% frozen morsel is not a weaker food than a 44% freeze-dried one. What differs is price per pound of food, freezer space, and shipping... frozen is cheaper on the same recipe but is pickup and local delivery only. Freeze-dried costs more, keeps in a cupboard, and ships free over $75.
Handling raw food safely
From Stella's own published guidance, with the morsel-specific points called out:
- Defrost overnight in a covered container in the refrigerator. Morsels can also be defrosted in a bowl on the counter for 10 to 20 minutes... a shortcut Stella gives for morsels and not for patties, because small pieces thaw fast
- To thaw faster still, seal the food in a zip-top bag or glass bowl and submerge in warm water
- Never cook, heat or microwave it
- Do not refreeze once thawed
- Wash your hands before and after handling it
- Use a clean dish every time, and clean any utensils or surfaces the raw food touches
- Served food can sit out up to two hours... discard anything left after that
One gap worth knowing: Stella publishes a two-day refrigerator window for thawed patties but states no post-thaw window for morsels anywhere we could find, so we won't invent one. Treat thawed morsels no more generously than patties. The countertop shortcut means you can thaw what you need as you need it rather than keeping thawed food around.
None of this handling guidance appears on Stella's product page... it comes from their separate feeding-frozen-food article. If there are small children or anyone immune-compromised in the house, talk to us and to your doctor before switching to raw.

Feeding guidelines
Stella's published amounts for adult dogs, per day, split across two meals. Measured 8 oz dry cups, level.
| Your dog's weight | Cups/day |
|---|---|
| 5 lb | ¾ |
| 10 lb | 1½ |
| 15 lb | 2 |
| 20 lb | 2½ |
| 40 lb | 4 |
| 60 lb | 5½ |
| 80 lb | 6¾ |
| 100 lb | 8 |
Every chart is a starting point. Check your dog's body condition after two or three weeks and adjust.
Switching over
Stella's guidance: seven to ten days, mixing with the current food and shifting the ratio. Sudden changes and overfeeding both cause digestive upset.
Sizes
Check the size selector above for what we currently stock. Stella does not publish package sizes for any of their frozen morsels on their website, so we'd rather point you at our own stock than repeat a figure they haven't given.
On the label statement
Stella does not publish the formal AAFCO nutritional adequacy statement or the life stage on their website for any frozen or freeze-dried raw product, so we can't tell you from here which life stage it's approved for. Ask us and we'll read it off the box rather than guess.
